No pay-to-win microtransactions in The Division

Last week a deluge of previews and post about Ubisoft’s impending MMO-esque RPG shooter The Division flooded the internet – so that happens to be the thing everybody’s talking about right now.

The general consensus is that it’s a bit like Destiny, but with a little more RPG soul to it, and most who’ve had time with the game so far have walked away impressed.

We know the game’s set to include DLC but there’s been very little detail on what that DLC might be – whether it’s the sort of stuff that makes live in post-apocalyptic New York easier, or if it just makes your digital avatar look spiffier. The worry is that Ubisoft might sneak in a pit of pay-to-win nonsense – but that’s not happening.

According to Massive’s creative director Magnus Jansen, The Division won’t have any pay-to-win or fast-tracking mechanics in place.

“It’s one of the things that we looked at because if people like the game and want to purchase extra things I don’t mind that. But microtransactions, as it’s defined, we do not have them,” said Jansen, speaking to VG247.

“You cannot spend a little bit of money and fast-track to get better gear or pay to win or vanity items. We do not have that. The short answer is no, we don’t have microtransactions, period.

We will have DLC. We don’t have it yet because we’re just barely finishing the game.”

So there you have it. No paying to win, and no lazy buggers fast-tracking their progress. Of course, Bungie said the same thing about Destiny, before sneaking in auto-levelling character boosts and Silver microtransactions in to the game towards the end of last year.

Which means tomorrow they’ll announce their innovative “pay to proceed” mini payment system.

That is, by far more innovative than they could go, I mean, the whole Uplay changed, or at least a little bit of it’s name…

Great news… Now we just need to find a way to get the (other) players not to cheat their way to the top… like GTAV

Fills you with confidence on the state of the finished product doesn’t it?
