In game, look at those water drops

Last week Geoff posted an article about the monstrous gaming machine that PC Gamer in the UK had put together called the Large Pixel Collider, well today the second bit of game  footage (following Arma 3, which is impressive in scope and not much else)  has been released onto YouTube and it’s better than I personally expected.

Now remember YouTube graphics will always pale in comparison to the true experience but even this YouTube video at it’s highest rating is too much for my laptop to play. I had to tone it down to 1080p to watch the video without juddering. That’s incredible.

If you watch this on anything under 1080p you should be ashamed of yourself, hell I’m ashamed that I can’t watch it at the natural resolution of 1440p.

Compare this to the Killzone: Shadow Fall footage and it starts to become apparent how much further ahead the PC master race is. Mind you I bet none of you PC fanboys could afford to put a LPC together so in the end it really doesn’t matter.

I’m still drooling

It has a custom water cooling system, the CPU and all four Titans GPU’s are water cooled.

I own the game, I know how intensive it is. At 1600p, Very High settings, no SSAA and Physx on, a single Titan should average 46fps in a system with a reasonably fast CPU like the i7-4770K and 16GB of RAM. Unless they’re shooting for 120Hz on a 1440p monitor, running those four Titans on a 1440p monitor is a waste. Its possible that they also don’t have a 4K monitor lying around, but considering that they were allowed to build that rig I’d be surprised if they couldn’t find at least one to loan for testing.

It depends on the aspect ratio

          Remember

          1080 means 1920×1080 at 16:9

          1440 means 2560×1440 at 16:9

          1600 means 2560×1600 at 16:10

The reason they are running 1440 is most likely because they have a 16:9 monitor instead of a 16:10.

Alas (And this irks me) 16:10 is no longer the standard format of screens. everything is 16:9

No the problem is that adding more GPU’s, the performance doesn’t scale in direct proportion, having 4 Titans does not mean 4 times the speed or performance. Metro Last light is the most graphically intense game at the moment, its the new Crysis.

So bumping up the resulotion from 1080p to 1440p will the all settings on ultra takes a big hit on that pc.

But it’s 1440p, which a single Titan can manage if you turn off SSAA. Why couldn’t they test 4K instead?

What he’s saying, is that 2 titans can max it out easily at 1440p, with 4, they should be pushing 4k res.

            November 27, 2013 at 12:14

Go search for just 3 titans in sli 4k benchmarks and you see even with three they struggle to run games at 4k with high fps

          • ToshZA

            November 27, 2013 at 12:17

so 4 might give it that extra edge to make the games playable at 4k. The point still stands? I don’t understand why you mentioned this…

            November 27, 2013 at 12:22

Check this benchmark with 3 monitors running crysis on 3 way Titan sli, check the FPS, look at the difference from 2 Titans to 3 Titans, doesnt scale well

Running three screens i would think would have the same effect as running a single screen 4k, just thumb sucking here, and they could of played metro last light on 3 screens, and that benchmark was an crysis 1, now can you imagine metro last light

          • Wesley Fick

            November 27, 2013 at 12:42

That’s triple-monitor, which is a much more complicated task to get running than a single monitor at 4K. What you’re seeing there is the limit of what can be done with Crysis using a SLI bridge. I’m willing to bet money that if you put that same test into a frame time perspective, you’ll see that the third frame that should be rendered on the third GPU is getting dropped.

            http://www.anandtech.com/show/7120/some-quick-gaming-numbers-at-4k-max-settings

The first graph shows a 61fps average in Last Light, at 4K with max settings, using four Titans. I know those are averages and not frame times, but there it is. Perhaps some systems are struggling to feed four Titans in SLI because the CPU becomes a bottleneck at that point.

Whoever is aiming has a very hard time getting his shots lined up. The time where he aimed from head to head it seems to just jump. And sometimes it looks as if he/she is really struggling to aim on the faster moving targets. This usually happens when mouse feels unresponsive and you overcompensate.
It is very pronounced in this video.

            November 27, 2013 at 12:14

Well there was some crappy mouse movement that you can pick up on the video where it seems to “jump”

            This can either be:
            a) Graphical lag
            b) recording lag
            c) possible input lag

It’s not a far stretch to get to input lag.

The point is, there was some form of “lag” evident in the the video and it would be cool to know if it was actual lag/recording lag/input lag

Edit: Option D) The player is just a crappy player

Another reason why the 2003 GOTY Wind Waker kicks next gen butt.

I can see the Wii U sales picking up this xmas as people realise that Nintendo is the the only company that has kept gaming to its golden roots. While the next gen runs all over the place with its overly expensive production costs flailing around in the air.

P.S.XCOM EU also took me by surprise. For a game with minimal graphic budget it has sucked more hours out of my life than Skyrim did.
