Speculation, rumour and conjecture be damned! We reported earlier today that rumour had Halo 4 primed for release on November 6 this year.

It’s no longer rumour – as Microsoft has conformed that the Spartan-filled sequel will go head to head with the next Call of Duty, before this year’s holiday season.

“We are beginning a new saga with ‘Halo 4’ and embarking on a journey that will encompass the next decade of ‘Halo’ games and experiences,” said Phil Spencer, corporate vice president of Microsoft Studios in a press release. “Millions of fans worldwide have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to step back into the boots of Master Chief, and, with ‘Halo 4’ leading the charge, we’re confident 2012 will be the most successful year in Xbox history.”

It’s the first new Halo game not to be developed by series progenitors, Bungie. Instead, it’s developed by a new studio that Microsoft set up to carry the Halo torch, 343 Industries. It’ll be coming on November 6, the very same date that the next Call of Duty, quite possibly Black Ops 2, is set to release. Both series are phenomenally popular. Halo arguably kickstarted the whole First Person Shooter craze on consoles (though GoldenEye 64 would like to have a word), with over 40 million games from the series finding its way in to homes worldwide.

It’s an odd choice of date, to be sure – if the rumours about Call of Duty’s release date are true; with both vying for the multiplayer attention of shooter fans, one of them has to lose out. Will Halo’s legacy, the fact that there isn’t a new one every year and Cortana’s digital blue ass keep it a winner?

Which will it be for you, Xbox shooter fans? Halo or COD?
