Tomorrow is national Heritage day, which actually started its life out as a Kwa-Zulu Natal holiday focused on King Shaka. It’s now been appropriated, in the spirit of unity, as National Braai. I’m certain that it was somehow mandated by South Africa’s meat industry, but I digress; who doesn’t love a braai..except for those pale waifish vegans, of course.

In the spirit of Braai day…and because I like sitting around a fire drinking beer, I’ll be spending much of tomorrow flipping steaks, lamb chops, pork rashers and ‘n klein bietjie wors (what? I’m Asian!) on a nicely heated grill. If I can find ‘em, I’ll be grabbing a few skilpadjies too; minced up lamb’s liver parcels wrapped in the caul fat. They’re just fantastic on a braai. The stuff will drive your cholesterol through the roof and may lead to a heart attack, but by god it’s delicious.

What’s your favourite bit of stuff to throw on a braai?

Editor. I’m old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time – they were capable of being masterpieces. I’m here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.

    KLEIN BIETJIE WORS….

    HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAHAAHAAAAAAA, oh you!

    • HvR

shouldn’t it be bietjie klein wors?

  • Admiral Chief 0

Tbone, sirloin or rib-eye on the braai for me, with some succulent red meat spices and olive oil.

    • Alien Emperor Trevor

Just remember, it must be well done.

      • Admiral Chief 0

        YOU SHUT YOUR HEATHEN MOUTH!

        Medium rare or GTFO

A good defibrillator must be able to bring out another moo or two

      • Brady miaau

        Done well?

      • Anon A Mouse

You’re revering to the braai master and not the meat I presume?

      • Viking Of Science

Ja, Jirre Trev. Wat @Admiral_Chief:disqus sê: “Medium Rare” of niks. Dit is die mandaat van die vleis gode!

    • HvR

Have been marinating a butterflied skaapboud since Sunday which will be the mains with big mushrooms and as-patat.

Doing some boeries and rump for appetizer and entrées.

Still need to decide on desert, something in Dutch Oven.

      • Brady miaau

No, no, the other type of Dutch Oven, right? 🙂

        • HvR

Hehehe, the in-laws will never see it coming.

No, no ,no something in the cast iron braadpan.

          • Brady miaau

            🙂 Hah, in-laws 🙂

      • Skyblue

Fukken hell, I’ve just cancelled my tomorrow to visit you!

  • Alien Emperor Trevor

FAKE ASIAN! If you were true to your heritage you’d be braaing, while your neighbour would be looking for his cat. #lacist

  • Alien Emperor Trevor

My company is having a dress up thing on Friday, you can come dressed as something from your heritage. Apparently I can’t come to work in blackface to celebrate my coal mining heritage. Racists.

    • Brady miaau

My birthday later this week, heard about this roosterkoek thing over the weekend.

Having people over, swim, braai, that sort of thing. Any ideas for the roosterkoek?

      • Anon A Mouse

        Easy as

        • Brady miaau

Do I have to set an umbrella alight?

I mean, I would have to go buy one and everything. Seems like a lot of effort. Sjoe

          Thanks for the update, though!

          • Anon A Mouse

It’s basically bread that you braai on the coals, what you put in is up to you. I usually just do the dough and soak it with apricot jam, what ever the person want inside they put in themselves after it leaves the braai.

          • Brady miaau

Ok, fair enough. Jam too sweet for me, but I get the idea. Do you buy the dough or make it at home? I may just make it, If I do not play in a chess tournament.

            Everything is better with bacon.

          • Anon A Mouse

Ain’t nobody got time for making dough. I usually buy it but the bread dough, not the pastry dough. If I have the time I usually bake a bread with bits of bacon and feta inside the dough, then bake it in the oven. Heavenly.

          • Brady miaau

Making dough not so bad: two options
            1) Breadmaker
            2) Kenwood chef, bit more work, but some very nice dough

Have people round for breakfast, start cooking the bread 15 minutes before they come. Hmm, very nice.

          • HvR

Can buy ready made bread dough (I mix in some flour to make it less sticky) at the shop but real easy to make.

Packet of yeast, 1kg to 1.5kg white flour, spoon of sugar, mix in some warm water until you have a firm and not sticky dough. Let is rise for hour+, Kneed it down and make squares. Let rise again for hour.

On to medium low heat coals, turn regularly until nice and brown on the outside. When you flick it with you finger it should have a hollow sound.

Serve hot with jam, bacon, cheese, wors or on its own.

          • Skyblue

            Kak! Nothing but butter required!

          • Skyblue

Mix a bit of garlic in, make small half size rolls and chuck it on, can’t go wrong. Also make sure the heat is low.

        • Spaffy

I was watching this earlier. Ag fok lol

        • HvR

          That isn’t roosterkoek.

Roosterkoek is white bread dough (I make mine slightly sweeter and drier than regular dough) you bake/grill on the rooster.

You can put the same dough on a stok and spit it, then it is called stokbrood.

    • Skyblue

OMG! Roosterbrood is my third favourite thing in the world right after blow jobs while watching Champions League footy and home made espetada.

  • Jonah Cash

Why are all the videos more than 10 minutes long? I want a hurried 2-3 minutes video of a game, I don’t want to see 10 minutes of any game I want to play those 10 minutes myself!!! I don’t get this trend at all……….

    • Brady miaau

stupid long videos, like stupid long posts or blogs.

On game adverts, If it cannot be said in a few minutes, should it be said?

  • Viking Of Science

sneaky @OddSockZA:disqus , I see what you did with Xbox One and China. good one.

    Also, Braaibroodjies!

  • Brady miaau

I was considering rump steak: cover it with butter and spices and put it on the fire. Take it off damn quickly and put it back. Rinse and repeat a few time. Flame grilled meat, with juice ON THE INSIDE, still tender and pink.

    Must pay careful attention………

    • HvR

Mix in some good brandy into the butter.

      • Brady miaau

Cannot have brandy, sugar problem. Also I want some flames, not SOME flames

  • Sir Rants A Lot Llew

I’ll be skipping braai day. Heck probably be skipping all forms of food till Thursday. Broke a tooth. It hurts. I feel sorry for myself. *cries*

    • Viking Of Science

      It’s called a blender, make a meatshake!

      • Sir Rants A Lot Llew
