The worst thing about Superman Returns was not the lackluster plot, the silly super-son angle, or the incredibly enticing premise of Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor being wasted on yet another real estate scheme. No, the worst thing about Superman Returns was just how good Brandon Routh was as the Man of Steel and Clark Kent. That may not sound like a bad thing, but due to the rest of the movie being such a ho-hum affair, we would never get to see Routh don the red and blue pyjamas again, which was just infuriating. That doesn’t mean that he’s done dressing up as a superhero though.

It was announced earlier in the year that Routh would be joining the cast CW’s Arrow in its upcoming third season, during which he will be playing scientist Ray Palmer. As any comic book geek worth his salt knows, Ray Palmer is the civilian identity of The Atom, the size-changing superhero who is also a member of the Justice League. But thus far there has been zero mention of Palmer’s superhero alter ego, leading some fans to wonder if he was ever going to suit up.

But have no fear, because while doing an interview on the DJ Tanner Radio Show (via ComicBook.com) (Also, no relation to DJ Tanner from Full House), Routh was asked to compare the red and blue Superman costume to the Atom’s red and blue getup, to which he revealed that he’s actually seen the concept art for the Atom suit.

“It’s a totally different suit and I haven’t been in it yet, I’ve only seen drawings.”

“It’s a very different character and I really can’t say too much about what the suit’s going to look like — just that it’s very different and I don’t believe it has a cape, which doesn’t really surprise anybody if you’ve seen The Atom in the comics.”

Before you get too excited about it though, Routh went to state that he doesn’t know when you will get to see Ray Palmer suit up and shrink down, as they have already filmed the new season’s first 6 episodes, and it definitely wasn’t in any of those.

That doesn’t mean that his character won’t have anything to contribute while he’s still dressed in business suits though.

“It’s a cool opportunity; it’s a cool show with a huge following. They do a great job grounding the show. Having my character on there — he has a lot of different elements. I get to come on there and [do some] comedy in a pretty dark world. My character, Ray Palmer, interacts with Felicity mostly in the episodes I’ve shot so far and it’s just a lot of fun. I have a great time working with Emily. I think it’s going to add a whole new element to the show that I think fans will like, whether they dislike Ray getting into the middle of the Oliver/Felicity relationship or not.”

Routh also spoke about his experience in making Superman Returns and revealed that despite the film often getting heavily criticized on the internet, he often has people telling him how much of a guilty pleasure it is while nobody has yet had the balls to tell him to his face that either his performance or the movie overall sucked. I’m sure that being 6ft4 and built like an action figure helps. But even when it comes to those criticisms that do surface, Routh has learned to just take them in his stride.

“It doesn’t weigh on me and never really did. I took the job knowing full well that was going to be something that was going to be part of my life probably forever. Thankfully, it’s in a good way. I’m proud of the movie and a lot of people enjoyed it so that helps, I guess. And having it be such an inspirational, iconic role, that’s a nice thing to carry with me and have it be part of who people see me as.”

Arrow returns for its third season on US networks on October 8, 2014. It should hopefully follow locally not too long after that.

I want to see what they do with Ronnie Raymond. If he gets a proper reveal I’ll explode my pants.

You may need to invest in new pants so long, because Robbie Amell confirmed last week that he’s going to become Firestorm in the show.

I know, but is he going to have the whole flaming head ‘o hair from the comics like a boss, or just like some lame ginger.
