Welcome to October, the month of scary movies! I’ve decided that, seeing as I’ve been given free reign over the Midweek Movie Mouth-Off (muahahaha!), we’re going to have a month of discussing all things Halloween. To start off, let’s talk about the first scary movie you ever saw.
Now, depending on how old you were, the first scary movie you saw might not have been a scary movie at all. That was the case for me, with Ghostbusters II. I can’t remember how old I was when I watched it, but considering it came out in 1989 I was probably only about 4. From the scene with the baby carriage to the freaky painting, that Ghostbusters II legitimately scared the hell out of me. As an adult I can see that it wasn’t that bad, but for an impressionable child? I was afraid of the dark for years!
So what was your first scary movie experience? And (make me feel better about myself here, please) how long did you need to have your night-light on for afterwards?

I don’t remember, it was probably one of the Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday 13th movies. I do however remember the original V series not making me a happy little camper.

For me it was the usual, ‘It’ and ‘Arachnophobia’. Clowns and spiders, about as scary as it gets.
Also, Gremlins actually had a few scary moments…

Oh my gosh, It. How could I forget? Well, I probably blocked it out and now you’ve reminded me. Thanks so much Supes!

This may actually have come after the normal Nightmare on Elm Streets and Halloweens, but my earliest memory of being completely freaked the hell out by a scary movie was some weirdo B-grade flick set in the near future. I have zero idea what the movie was called or even what the basic plot was, I just remember a scene of a lady going nuts, and then gruesomely killing her husband with a pair of these futuristic electric knitting needles. The image of her cackling like crazy while these auto-needles kept knitting away at his entrails has been burnt into my memory ever since.

When the I.T department mandates Internet Explorer over Chrome… very scary indeed.

That explains why I don’t like horror movies, I’m living in one.

I’m 9 years old. I’m vacationing in Jeffreys Bay by my grandad. He leaves me alone with other youths. We go rent a movie, find an empty conference room and start watching. The film is called “Ticks”.
What’s so scary about a Tick? Imagine a tick the size of a soccer ball, and it doesn’t shout spoon. Now imagine thousands of them, descending on a lone cabin in the woods.
Damn freaky first film I ever saw.

Gremlins! I don’t recall how old I was when I first watched it, but it scary the hell out of me.
I specifically remember a scene where a man drops something and reaches for it under a cabinet. He feels around, a gremlin emerges and starts chomping on his wrist.
I could not walk up to my bed for years! I would take a little run up and jump from miles away, just so that my feet would not come close enough for a gremlin to grab me
