I really enjoyed Craig Gillespie’s 2011 remake of Tom Holland’s Fright Night. Now, some of you might disagree, but I gladly reject your scorn every time I sit back to enjoy a horror film that oozes fun…which, I admit, might be part of the problem that some people might have with the film. Today, a trailer for Fright Night 2: New Blood has seen the light and I can say, without a doubt, that most of you will be wishing for more of the original. Well, the original remake. You know what I mean!
As I mentioned above, 2011’s Fright Night was not everyone’s cup of tea (or blood) but it was easy to see why it managed to achieve its ‘guilty pleasure’ status. Craig Gillespie and the film’s charismatic cast (including the Doctor!) managed to blend just the right amount of blood, action, wit and dark humour into Fright Night to breathe life into what could have been a bland film but I am sorry to say, it looks like the sequel, Fright Night 2: New Blood, is looking to do exactly the opposite.
Wait…is it a sequel? It has the number ‘2’ in the title, but it also seems to be rehashing the story from the first film with less of a budget and loads more boobs? However, I am not talking about Imogen Poots (Sorry Kervyn…and all other men ever) but actress Jamie Murray, who some of you might recognize from shows such as Spartacus, Dexter and Defiance
. Unlike the original, the role of Jerry has no been changed to ‘Gerri’, a saucy female vampire who, as per the trailer, makes out with hot girls in lingerie and lifts out of pools of water seductively. So, yes, this isn’t really a sequel…or a remake. As per this article over at Slashfilm, it has no ties with the either of the previous Fright Night films.
Have a look at the synopsis:
By day Gerri Dandridge (Jaime Murray) is a sexy professor, but by night she transforms into a real-life vampire with an unquenchable thirst for human blood. So when a group of high school students travel abroad to study in Romania, they find themselves ensnared in Gerri’s chilling web of lust and terror. Charley and “Evil” Ed must stop Gerri from drinking and bathing in the blood of a “new moon virgin,” which just so happens to be Charley’s ex-girlfriend, Amy. They enlist help from Peter Vincent, the vampire hunting host of a reality show called “Fright Night,” to drive a stake through Gerri’s plan and save Amy from a fate far worse than death.
Holy Nosferatu, Batman! She turns into a ‘real life’ vampire and they have to ‘drive a stake’ through Gerri’s plan? This seems like one I will definitely keep in mind for B-movie night. It’ll have to wait till then anyway, as this is a direct-to-DVD release.

For a straight-to-dvd film it doesn’t look too bad… A pity that the remake isn’t getting a proper sequel.
