Matthew McConnaughey had a hell of a 2012. He dressed in strips of leather and not much else in Magic Mike, did weird things to a piece of chicken in Killer Joe and somehow managed to not get overshadowed by Nicole Kidman peeing on Zac Efron for real in The Paperboy.
And it looks like he’s going to continue this amazing trend into 2013 or his name is Mud. Oh wait, it actually is Mud. Well that’s awkward.
Two boys, Ellis and his friend Neckbone, who find a man named Mud hiding out on an island in the Mississippi. Mud describes fantastic scenarios — he killed a man in Texas and vengeful bounty hunters are coming to get him. He says he is planning to meet and escape with the love of his life, Juniper, who is waiting for him in town. Skeptical but intrigued, Ellis and Neckbone agree to help him. It isn’t long until Mud’s visions come true and their small town is besieged by a beautiful girl with a line of bounty hunters in tow.
I’m getting quite a strong 80’s buddy movie vibe here, a la Stand By Me and that is most definitely not a bad thing. Writer-director Jeff Nicols’ last apocalyptic effort, Take Shelter, was a criminally underwatched gem (we saw it though, and really loved it) but I’ve got a feeling that that may not be the case here. That movie simply didn’t have the star power of Matthew McConnaughey’s abs.
