Almost six years later, Fortnite is ready to launch next month on PC and console

Fortnite (2)

E3 (and other shows!) may have plenty of new games to show off, but there’s always a growing number of titles that’ll fail to cross the finish line and languish in vapourware purgatory. Scalebound is now a dream of dragon-riding that’ll never be, Fable Legends was outright cancelled and you’ll sooner spot Bigfoot taking a dump than you would Rockstar’s legendary Agent.

One other game that was nearing that missing in action status? Fortnite from Epic Games, announced at the height of the zombie craze in 2011 and then seldom seen afterwards. After almost six years, Fortnite has finally hammered down a release date: July 25. If you’re chomping at some leftover grey matter to get in, Steam Early Access will give you a headstart on July 21, with the game rockin’ some free-to-play content after that on PC, Mac, PS4 and Xbox One.

Gearbox will publish the boxed physical copy of Fortnite on console, just in case you want to avoid going all-digital. Speaking of cashing in, here’s what each tier in the various founder packs will get you. I’ve yet to meet anyone who’ll spend that much on a single game, but hey at least the option is there:

As I mentioned above, Fortnite has been in development for ages now. A tower defense game that mixes in looting and shooting, its take on the zombie apocalypse has always been downright goofy. Expect to see more of it in action next week at an event that rhymes with D-Flea.

Something wrong gentlemen? You come here prepared to read the words of a madman, and instead found a lunatic obsessed with comics, Batman and Raul Julia’s M Bison performance in the 1994 Street Fighter movie? Fine! Keep your bio! In fact, now might be a good time to pray to it!

  • Frik van der Hewerskink

I have been waiting for this game for so long, Can’t wait

  • Pieter Kruger

WOW looks nice! Sunset Overdrive meets Dead Rising with Fort building! I’m in!☺☺☺

  • HairyEwok

Been one of the lucky people chosen to test the game through its development…. I’ll say this, its fun, its whacky and great to play with friends.

The real fun is building your own persistent fort, it’s used as your command base and does get attacked by waves of “husks” (the zambies names) as you progress into the more difficult zones.

  • Just a small note. The launches in early access!

    WTF!!!

6 years of development (5 I have personally waited for) and it comes out as an ea title.

I feel this is going a bit too far.

Too bad I have waited so long for the game that I pre-ordered the ltd edition last night. 😛

    • Viper_ZA

Hot damn, need to do the same right now!

      • The nice thing about the ltd edition is that you get 2 free (well free in the broad sense) copies of the game for friends.

        • Viper_ZA

Awesome, that takes the “sting” out a wee bit, all done! 😀

  • Viper_ZA

“I’ve yet to meet anyone who’ll spend that much on a single game, but hey at least the option is there…”

    I just did! 😀

  • Original Heretic

This looks like it could be great fun.

  • Ricardo Harvey

Will Epic at least make this available for SA or is it another FU like they did with Paragon

  • Dark Knight Mgtow

Ninja only? Where’s arming sword and shield knight, and danish warsword swordsman?
