Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert are looking to bring the cult classic 1950s novel by John Wyndham, Day of the Triffids, to the big screen, adapting the story of one momentously dark period in human history for a wider audience, and to do so, they’re approaching Neil “Luther” Cross for the project.

Set in a world where a vast majority of humanity has gone blind after witnessing a mysterious meteor shower, Day of the Triffids tells the story of Bill Maser, who wakes up in hospital after the event and has to contend with not only vicious survivors and shambling hordes of blind people, but deadly plant-like creatures  known as Triffids, who have used the opportunity to escape and begin breeding.

This isn’t the first time that the Triffids story has been adapted however, as a mini-series from several years ago tried to do the classic property justice, but ended up butchering the novel with an ending that was on I am Legend levels of awful, while a cheesy film that was even older didn’t really capture the feel of the book.

Cross has also just finished work on the drug-based film Midnight delivery, which will be directed by Brian Kirk, while having also won some acclaim for his work on the script for the horror film Mama.

It’s unclear yet whether Raimi will direct the film or not, but it would be the perfect material for the director who made his name with the Evil Dead films. Let’s just hope that the source material doesn’t become too Americanised in the process.
