Lionsgate loves Leprachauns

What, you thought that we would skip out on Saint Patricks day without mentioning one of the most horrible film franchises to ever shillelagh a culture in the process?

Like any fan of bad horror/thriller/assorted cheeses, Leprechaun will always hold a special place in my heart, from its original debut that introduced the world to Jennifer Aniston, to its beyond crazy sequels that took the Warwick Davis portrayed imp into the ghetto, and even into space itself.

And now, the pot of gold obsessed midget is making a return.

Leprechaun will be getting the reboot treatment courtesy of Lionsgate and WWE Studios, you know, those guys who pumped out films like See no evil, The Condemned (Which I actually enjoyed) and shudder, The Chaperone.

“We’ve been looking for ways to continue our relationship with Lionsgate,” WWE head Michael Luisi said to Variety.”And we saw Leprechaun as the perfect opportunity to take a well-known franchise and put a modern-day spin on it.

“This is a property we believe our audience will respond to, and we continue to look for ways to surprise and engage them.” While it’s unclear yet on cast, script and directing details, I’d wager a hundred body-slams that WWE Studios will make use of that other irish-themed vertically challenged performer, Hornswaggle for the lead role, for the planned 2013 release.

Happy St Patrick’s Day everyone!

I’m not sure if I understand. The WWE, which is packed with tough wrestling types standing over 7 feet high, looks at Leprechaun, a franchise built around a 2 foot tall villain and says, “Perfect! That’s for us.”

Will he be some aberrant breed of Leprechaun? An outsized, 7 foot tall Leprechaun? Presumably, the black sheep of the family.

Wait, hang on, that might make for a pretty good premise
