Iron Man 3 finds its villain

With all the attention currently being focused on The Avengers, which is slowly being released in dribs and drabs before the actual film even debuts, it’s easy to forget that there are other movies based on Marvel comics that are in the pipeline.

Iron Man 3 may have a director in the form of Shane Black, and the return of Robert Downey Jr as super-awesome arrogant philanthropist billionaire crime-fighter Tony Stark, but it’s been lacking a villain.

Until now that is, as Sir Ben “no more artsy roles” Kingsley has entered final negotiations to portray the principle antagonist.

But the big question of course is, which villain will he actually play? It’d be easy enough to imagine the esteemed actor as pulling a David Carradine and going ahead as Starks’ greatest nemesis, The Mandarin.

But that might be mere white-washing speculation, as rumours point towards the third film being based on the Extremis arc from the comic books, which saw Stark experiment with a new form of nano-technology which was being exploited by terrorists, but also allowed him to have greater control of his suit, opening up a whole new world of possibilities.

Filming only commences in May however, so we’ll just have to wait and see what exactly makes the cut for the big screen.
