Expect a messy divorce and bowling for cash, in Anchorman 2!

We all have our cult favourite movies and upcoming releases here in The Movies office. Kervyn has annexed yet another wall to post pictures from the set of Prometheus, while Noelle menacingly hisses at anyone who dares lay a finger on her pristine collection of Hunger Games novels.

Me? Besides my obvious Batman fetish, I also happen to have a very soft spot in my heart for Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. It’s the reason why I wear Sex Panther cologne and shout Whammy! at inappropriate times.

Which is why I’m devouring any piece of news right now for the upcoming sequel.

Speaking to Salon, Director Adam McKay gave a few details away on what to expect in the second film. “I don’t want to give away too much,” McKay said, “but I’ll just give a couple pieces of ideas that we’ve kicked around.

Keep in mind we’re still writing the story, but I’ll say one phrase for you: custody battle. I’ll give you that. I’ll give you one other one: bowling for dollars.

Does that clue mean that Christina Applegates’ feisty character of Veronica Corningstone will return? And what custody battle is McKay talking about? Surely not Baxter, beloved news-hound and best friend to Ron Burgundy?

As for the relevance of an Anchorman sequel, McKay was far more willing to talk about that;

Anchorman gets more and more relevant every year. Part of what inspired the movie was just how ridiculous the news had become. It was all ratings driven. The people were getting better and better looking.

The weather women were getting outrageously beautiful. It was all about the voice and the hair. Since we made the movie it’s gone even more in that direction.

We talk about all these anchormen on the air now and they’re all kind of Ron Burgundy-esque guys, and the news has gotten to be nothing more than a ratings-driven profit machine that is never going to examine any of the real power in this country.

The ridiculousness of Anchorman got less and less observed.

Sounds like the SABC could learn a thing or two from Ron Burgundy.
