It's a colourful world in these new pictures for PACIFIC RIM

A person faces many challenges in their life, tasks and labours which need genuine blood, sweat and tears to overcome. But like my great-granddaddy used to say after having eaten one too many shrooms before dinner, nothing solves those issues like a giant robot.

Pacific Rim is using just such an approach, because when the planet is threatened by gigantic monsters called Kaiju, gearing up a massive automaton to put a really big boot to an even bigger ass is kind of practical at the end of the day. So what does the world actually look like, after a tussle between a massive mechanoid and Cthulu Jr?

Directed by Guillermo Del Toro, if you happen to be a fan of his work, you might notice in these Empire pics that the world that he has created has less of that trademark stainless steel look and surgical neatness, presenting a rather more colourful local for the epic battles ahead.

“I wanted to make not a war movie, but an adventure movie, with a huge, romantic sense of adventure, a sense of grandeur, and operatic battles,” Del Toro said at Comic-Con earlier this year to Slashfilm.

And giant robots sell well, right Michael Bay? Pacific Rim is currently scheduled for release next year July. Pacific Rim stars Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman and Charlie Day.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.

On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
