New STAR WARS news might leave fans shaking their fists at the heavens

Morning, folks! As we all know, the internet pretty much exploded yesterday with news of Lucasfilm being sold to Disney with every movie geek and his dog having loads too say, including wish lists about a mile long. We have a bit of bad news for many die hard fans today though as a certain troublesome rumour was confirmed…

Since the release of the first Star Wars films the extended universe has grown almost impossibly huge, with numerous books, games and animated series extend on the original story with new characters, some shortly following on the rebellion and some taking place many, many years later. Many of these stories are quite brilliant, and any potential Lucasfilm would have absolutely no trouble finding a story that will fit into a universe that has been lovingly expanded on by fans over the last few years…but it seems like all those are being completely ignored, as it has been announced that the new Star Wars film will be an original story. While that is confirmed, there is another rumour that states that a Avengers-style universe might be introduced with different characters might feature in their own films.

Though I am intrigued, I am actually not very optimistic about this at the moment, but this might be because my fantasy dream of Mara Jade featuring in the new films has now been completely dashed. With so many amazing stories and characters to choose from, why not use an existing story that will ensure an epic and fan-pleasing film? I know Kervyn is most likely weeping frantically while reading this and he probably isn’t the only one?

Mark Hamill has also spoken out regarding the new trilogy, and mentioned in an interview with EW that he was aware of the plans for a new trilogy since last August. He also confirmed that Kathleen Kennedy will definitely be handling a lot of the work on the new films since George’s retirement, which might be a bit of a silver lining for the rest of us who aren’t very fond of Mr. Lucas anymore.

All that said, the rumour mill inevitable start churning at full speed and there are already a few snippets of speculation as Dale Pollock, writer of Skywalking: The Life And Films Of George Lucas has stated that the new films will feature “three most exciting stories…they had propulsive action, really interesting new worlds, new characters. I remember thinking, ‘I want to see these 3 movies.

I don’t know about you, but that seems a tad rehearsed but if that is the case, maybe the Hollywood gods will smile on us in 2015! Dale Pollock has also mentioned that George Lucas had intended for Star Wars to have 12 episodes, so he originally had drafts for a story where Luke, Leia and Han are in their 40’s. If it in any way turns out that these drafts will form part of the new trilogy then it will need to be updated, naturally, as I really doubt any of the cast could pull off being 40 anymore by a long shot. Okay, so I give you all 5 minutes to think up a few Carrie Fisher jokes before we continue…satisfied? Okay, good!

So, I predict that the next big question that will be discussed and debated with much enthusiasm on the internet will be regarding potential directors and I’ll just use this opportunity to state that my money will be in the director of Brad Bird, schedule permitting. You might be more familiar with him as the director of the Iron Giant, The Incredibles, Ratatouille and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. It seems the perfect fit, don’t you think? Even more perfect as he’s definitely on Disney’s good books.

So, let’s hear it! Who do you want to see helm the new films and what do you would you like to see story-wise?

  1. Because not everyone thinks that George Lucas can write amazing work, and that the extended universe isn’t the greatest work ever?

As a huge EU fan, I’ll be the first to admit that there are some serious stinkers out there, but there are even more amazing stories though. The Thrawn trilogy for example, would make for an amazing cinematic experience.

My biggest concern though, is that with the EU have so thoroughly covered the events after ROTJ, where in the timeline would this original story take place? And if if isn’t in the established timeline, would that mean that the EU is no longer cannon?

There were only three films and that was that. Everything else is merchandising crap. If more terrible Star Wars stuff appears, you fans are all to blame. I’m already pissed that they added new Anakin to the end of Return Of the Jedi.

I would love Ep 7-9 to be awesome but I just don’t see it happening… I can see them playing on the twins as a way to appeal to young audiences and a path to smuggle merchandisable crap into the film…
