Monday Box Office Report

Bruce Willis, Spartacus, a Marilyn Manson song and some family entertainment were among the new arrivals to hit the cinema last Valentines week, but as usual, only one of them could rule that specific roost. Oh, and another Nicholas Sparks film that featured the exact same poster/plot/ideas/kisses as Dear John, with a tweak here and there.

So who won?

While it may have done the impossible (Make Die Hard 4.0 look like a good film), the fifth Die Hard film nevertheless did some decent business at the box office. While the actual results will only be in tomorrow, studio estimates peg John McClane being in the wrong place at the wrong time to have made away with a Gruberrific $25 million so far.

Which is most likely pretty underwhelming, compared to the almost identical opening weekend of Die Hard 4’s $33 million. Here’s a look at the rest of the studio estimates, which will be updated when the actuals roll in:

  • A good day to Die Hard – $33.2 Million
  • Identity Thief –  $23.4 Million
  • Safe Haven –  $21.4 Million
  • Escape from Planet Earth – $16 Million
  • Warm Bodies –  $9 Million
  • Beautiful Creatures –  $7.4 Million
  • Side Effects –  $6.3 Million
  • Silver Linings Playbook – $6 Million
  • Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters – $3.4 Million
  • Zero Dark Thirty –  $3.1 Million
Argo and Mama finally dropped out of the top ten this week, while Identity Thief fell a spot to second place. Newcomer films Safe Haven and Escape from Planet Earth did some decent numbers in the third and fourth spots, while supernatural flick Beautiful Creatures debuted with an underwhelming grab at the sixth place.
