Friday Fright Club: Mama

We all love a good ghost story, and if you’ve been reading The Movies for a while you know that we love anything watermarked by Guillermo Del Toro. The sight of his name on a poster converts our money directly into popcorn and soda, even in the cases when he’s not the director.

Mama opens with a dad, having just killed his wife, taking his kids out to a remote cabin where he intends to kill them and then himself. However, before this can happen, something else jumps out of the darkness and kills him. They are found alive five years later, but having regressed to an almost feral state they are put through strict therapy before being released to their uncle (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his musician wife Annabel (Jessica Chastain). As the new ‘family’ moves into a court-given house, Annabel soon realises that something else is in the house with them… something that is watching over the kids.

Director Andres Muschietti manages to craft an entertaining, classic and easily accessible horror film with more than enough scares and creepiness to satisfy most horror appetites and it while it might not be the scariest film on the block, it helps having someone as talented as Chastain carry a film. Especially when the film’s final act swoops in, and it morphs from classic horror into a more distinct Del Toro feature, offering an interesting change of pace.

Definitely worth the watch, especially if scary kids freak you out. All I know is, if my kids ever talk about imaginary friends, I’m shipping them off to a relative.
