Sweet public domain, nothing beats creating a film based on some property that you have to pay sweet F-all rights for. Dante’s Inferno is one such property, and it’s getting a feature film adaptation. Except this time, there will be some royalties due, as Fede “Evil Dead” Alavarez is going to be helming an adaptation of the 2010 EA video game version of that descent into hell.

According to Deadline, pre-production on an adaptation of the game has been floating around Hollywood since the release of that title, but a lukewarm reception and poor sales kept it from going any further. Since then, the film has a few rewrites, with Bruce “Band of Brothers” McKenna contributing the most recent script.

In it, a young knight descends into the nine circles of hell, seeking to rescue his girlfriend who is trapped below. Navigating through the sins of mankind, Dante uses demonic and angelic weapons to fight his way through. While the game was pretty much a bland combination of average combat and annoying quick-time events, the version of hell that was presented in it was a nightmare vision of note.

It’s a story that’ll hit all the necessary demographics though, so there could be some money to be made. An animated film was released to go with the game, if you’re wondering what kind of tone could be possible with that potential adaptation. Provided that Federez can beat Ron Howard from releasing his adaptation first that is.

This could work. The game had good ideas and visual design, but it felt like they got halfway, put in a few looping sequences and called it a day. But regardless if they base it on the game or the original, the special effects should be awesome.

Just look at this, based on the original story…
