THE Rise OF THE Planet OF THE Apes irks me much more than it should and now I hear the sequel will be called Dawn OF THE Planet OF THE Apes.

Terminator 2 worked just fine. Numbers work 100% as long as the quality of the movie stands.

For comic book movies, it kind of makes sense. Comic book story arcs don’t have numbers, they have story titles, and I like that Marvel did this (and now Fox and Sony are following suit) for movies that adapt a particular story.
Stuff like Star Trek Into Darkness, or Transformers: Dark of the Moon (eurgh. I still cringe at how bad that title is) just sounds kind of silly though.

It completely depends on the type of movie series it is. Hunger Games, for example, is a sequence of movies that really need to be watched in the right orders. The movies follow a logical path that should be followed in a sequence. It should have numbers. The Marvel Movies, you don’t really need to watch them in order. They don’t follow on from each other with regards to the story each movie presents. They are essentially standalone movies. They should get subtitles.

Well in the case of Hunger Games (and Twilight) they have the problem that the first story’s title is what people identify with. If they had called the second and third films just Catching Fire and Mockingjay (which are the full titles of the second and third books), they would lose that brand recognition. So now we get The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
