A-Field-in-England

Here at The Movies, when it comes to more art house fair and sophisticated story-telling, we quickly descend into Philistine mode and gaze at something with pretty CGI hand fart energy effects instead. We’re uncultured like that, but every now and then, a film pops up that looks genuinely interesting, despite the fact that it’s threatening to be intelligent.

A field in England is one such movie, from Ben “Kill List” Wheatley. His movies haven’t exactly been normal to say the least. And his latest flick could be his strangest yet.

England: 1648 AD. A small group of deserters flee from a raging battle through an overgrown field. They are captured by two men: O’Neil and Cutler. O’Neil (Michael Smiley), an alchemist, forces the group to aid him in his search to find a hidden treasure that he believes is buried in the field. Crossing a vast mushroom circle, which provides their first meal, the group quickly descend into a chaos of arguments, fighting and paranoia, and, as it becomes clear that the treasure might be something other than gold, they slowly become victim to the terrifying energies trapped inside the field. A Field In England is a psychedelic trip into magic and madness from Ben Wheatley – award-winning director of Down Terrace, Kill List and Sightseers.

Yeah, that looks like pure nightmare fuel to me. The film has left critics divided over it so far, with some praising the weirdness, and others not digging the sheer misery that is forced on viewers. One common consensus however, is that A Field in England packs plenty of originality to go with its dark themes.

A film as weird as this will most likely not see a major release locally, but it’ll be up on streaming services from next month.
