Midweek Mouth-off: Are these the biggest turkeys of 2014?

Right, so last week Forbes Magazine ran an opinion piece predicting that the biggest box office bombs to come out of Hollywood this year will be Godzilla, RoboCop and Guardians of the Galaxy.

What do you think? Is this typical “we want it to fail” commentary from cynical Hollywood observers, or does the writer have a point? Do you think these three films will find an audience? And while you’re at it, are there any other high profile 2014 releases that you think will be ignored by cinema audiences? Let us know.

I think Robocop may fail, but Godzilla I see doing very very well! The same goes with Guardians of the galaxy.

Agreed on the RoboCop thing. Not in agreement about Godzilla cause of past tries.

Guardians may have the Marvel name behind it, but I think it’s more than likely going to come down to early reviews. Even if they’re not favourable though, I still don’t expect it to totally bomb as the Marvel brand name has become just a tad too big for that, but it might only end up doing middling business.

Godzilla on the other hand, I am a bit wary of, and not because of the quality of the film, which has looked superb thus far. It’s probably going to take a huge knock simply because of its proximity to other bigger releases. Opening 2 weeks after Amazing Spider-Man 2 and one week before X-Men: Days of Future Past is one helluva gamble. They’re essentially banking on one gigantic opening weekend to carry them through, which is not the smartest tactic.

Agreed. No clue why they are putting it in that window.

Guardians will be an interesting one to watch, especially because it will show whether Marvel has cachet as a brand or if it is movie to movie. We tend to forget about its flops, like The Punisher and Ghost Rider, and wobbles like the first Wolverine.

I have no faith for Robocop. I’m not even sure I want it to succeed. But I am just a zealot about the original.

Godzilla… I dunno, I liked the previous one and I think that if it’s done right it will be a big hit. If not in the US it might replicate Pacific Rim’s overseas performance.

Maleficent is a big gamble, but so far looks good. Ninja Turtles is also another big budget ‘if’.

I think Ninja Turtles took a massive leap forward in the public’s eyes with these recently released character designs.

Among giddy film fans, yes. But we both know that to get to the takings expected from blockbusters these days it will take a lot more. Here’s hoping their marketing campaign is quaffing ninja juice. It might even be an awesome film, but audiences couldn’t give a damn.
