It’s genuinely sad when a great concept gets stuck in the depths of development hell. Having owned the rights to Neil Gaiman’s classic novel American Gods for years, HBO have abandoned their crazy ambitious plan and the rights to American Gods have been snapped up by FreemantleMedia.

Initially announced back in 2011, HBO’s original plan was to have the show span 6 seasons, with each season having 10-12 episodes and a $35-40 million budget. Most of the budget was purported to be for special effects.

Gaiman confirmed that HBO jumped ship in a Reddit AMA in November, stating the following:

There is an American Gods TV series in the works. It’s no longer with HBO. The moment that things are ready to be announced I am sure they will be, either legitimately or via a leak in a big Hollywood Agency mailroom

Besides for the rights-acquisition announcement, there hasn’t been any further news out of FreemantleMedia yet about what their official plans are, but here’s hoping that the series is definitely still on and won’t be put on the back-burner.

I’m the kind of person that’s very picky when it comes to staying true to the source material, but as long as American Gods doesn’t end up an utter pile of tripe like Under the Dome, I’m sure it’ll come out fine. Though without a doubt, American Gods is a tricky book to tackle, with the sort of sex and violence that would have been perfect for HBO, considering how well they’ve done with Game of Thrones.

Either way, if you’ve not yet read American Gods, now’s your chance to get in there and spoiler it for yourself before the internet does it for you.

Six seasons? I agree American Gods belongs on TV and is too long for a movie, but six seasons would have been a stretch.
