Dune (2)

One of the greatest pieces of science fiction of the 20th Century, has to be Dune. Over books, novels and mini-series, that universe grew to become something that could have easily rivaled Star Wars and Star Trek. Way back when Frank Herbert had written his first book, interest had grown in adapting it for the big screen.

David Lynch eventually did just that, with an underwhelming effort when he directed that movie. And it’s a damn shame that Alejandro Jodorowsky never got to make a Dune movie, because his vision was just wonderfully mad.

Through interviews with legends and luminaries including HR Giger (artist, ALIEN), Gary Kurtz (producer, STAR WARS) and Nicolas Winding Refn (director, DRIVE and ONLY GOD FORGIVES), and an intimate and honest conversation with Jodorowsky filmed over the course of three years, director Pavich’s film – featuring never-before-seen realizations of Jodo’s mind-blowing psychedelic space opera (animated by Emmy Award nominated Syd Garon) – finally unearths the full saga of ‘The Greatest Movie Never Made’.

The trailer above is worth watching, even if its just to see the passion that Jodorowsky had for the project, and still does after all these decades. I would have loved to have seen this movie made, and seeing big names such as HR Giger, Orson Welles, Salvador Dali and Mick Jagger involved with the film, just proves how massive it could have been. The team he assembled eventually went on to do other stuff, but damn, I’m sad that this movie was never made.

Jodorowsky’s Dune opens in the US next month, so expect a wider release some time later in the year.

Never heard of this – it might be interesting. Then again, David Lynch’s version was also OTT and that just didn’t work for it.
