If you’re not a fan of overly cute kids in movies, then I have a feeling it’s going to be a hard knock life for you when watching this first trailer for Annie, the new “contemporary” remake of the classic movie/stage musical. This one is written/directed by Easy A‘s Will Gluck, and stars Quvenzhane Wallis – who is as cute as her name is hard to  pronounce – as the titular orphan, while Daddy Warbucks has been replaced by Jamies Foxx’s less ridiculously monikkred Will Stacks. Cameron Diaz is also in it as the shouty Ms Hannigan while Rose Byrne plays Rose Byrne. But really, you’re here for the cute kids and catchy tunes, so take it away Qivvun – Quefun- Damn it!

Academy Award® nominee Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) stars as Annie, a young, happy foster kid who’s also tough enough to make her way on the streets of New York in 2014.  Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they’d be back for her someday, it’s been a hard knock life ever since with her mean foster mom Miss Hannigan (Cameron Diaz).  But everything’s about to change when the hard-nosed tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx) – advised by his brilliant VP, Grace (Rose Byrne) and his shrewd and scheming campaign advisor, Guy (Bobby Cannavale) – makes a thinly-veiled campaign move and takes her in. Stacks believes he’s her guardian angel, but Annie’s self-assured nature and bright, sun-will-come-out-tomorrow outlook on life just might mean it’s the other way around.

Truth be told, I’ve never been a big fan of Annie – even though I have been earwormed several times by the catchy songs just like every other human being on the planet – and I have a feeling that that’s not going to change much with this new film. Changing up the beats a bit on a classic song just isn’t going to cut it (and Cameron Diaz apparently forgetting how to act, doesn’t help matters much either), but you can bet your bottom dollar that there’s a whole new generation of kids, and an older generation of wannabe kids, who will just lap this up.

Annie will come out tomorrow on Christmas Day this year.

Im sorry… but some things are better left in the past. The original was the best. Will be the best. A remake will never live up to what the original was.
