They say that breaking a mirror gives you 7 years’ bad luck. But what if the mirror totally deserved it, because it was a seriously spooky piece of glass that may have made your parents kill each other and then put the blame on your young brother. Yes, mirrors can do that. Just ask Karen Gillan, who has left the English comforts of the TARDIS behind to come over to Hollywood and scare the pants off people. And thus far it’s working, if this new trailer for Oculus is anything to go by.

Ten years ago, tragedy struck the Russell family, leaving the lives of teenage siblings Tim (Karen Gillan) and Kaylie (Brenton Thwaites) forever changed when Tim was convicted of the brutal murder of their parents. Now in his 20s, Tim is newly released from protective custody and only wants to move on with his life; but Kaylie, still haunted by that fateful night, is convinced her parents’ deaths were caused by something else altogether: a malevolent supernatural force—unleashed through the Lasser Glass, an antique mirror in their childhood home. Determined to prove Tim’s innocence, Kaylie tracks down the mirror, only to learn similar deaths have befallen previous owners over the past century. With the mysterious entity now back in their hands, Tim and Kaylie soon find their hold on reality shattered by terrifying hallucinations, and realize, too late, that their childhood nightmare is beginning again…

Oculus had it’s first press screenings in LA last week, and the buzz coming out of it, as well as the first few reviews popping up, has been really strong. Critics are calling it a genuinely scary horror movie that should make you never look in a mirror again. Darryn has apparently already been following this advice his entire life, based on how he grooms himself.

Oculus also stars Katee Sackhoff and Rory Cochrane and will be creeping up cinemas on April 11, 2014.

They can advertise this movie with the Oculus Rift. You see what it wants you to see.
