One thing I love about the festival circuit is how it shines the spotlight on brilliant little films that, due to their lack of marquee name star power, may have gone unnoticed otherwise. One such film is Blue Ruin, and boy did it ever get noticed. Written, directed, lensed and probably even catered by Jeremy Saulnier, this simple but apparently thrilling film garnered tons of praise, with some calling it the best American revenge thriller to come along in ages, and others comparing it to the works of the Coen Bros.

Those are some mighty big shoes to fill, but judging from this second, more narrative-filled trailer, Blue Ruin has no problem with finding comfortable footwear.

Dwight Evans is a mysterious outsider whose quiet life on the margins is turned upside down when he returns to his childhood home to carry out an act of vengeance. Proving himself an amateur assassin, he winds up in a brutal fight to protect his estranged family.

Blue Ruin stars Macon Blair, Devin Ratray, Amy Hargreaves, Kevin Kolack, Eve Plumb and David W. Thompson, and hits VOD and select cinemas on April 25, 2014.
