Steven Moffat talks DOCTOR WHO – It's not a fairy tale

Whether you love or hate the direction that Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has taken with Doctor Who, there’s no denying that his version of the rebel Time Lord has been very different from the Russell Davies Doctors portrayed by Christoper Ecclestone and David Tennant. His show has had a darker element, with a mix of fairy tale thrown in for good measure. But expect the fable to fall away when Doctor Who returns for an eighth season.

“I think it feels more serious,” Moffat said to SFX about the tone and new direction of the show.

One of the watchwords we have this year is there are consequences for choosing to live like this. It’s not a fairytale. If you have people back home, if you run away it’s going to have an effect on them. And it’s not necessarily always going to be lovely. And does the Doctor make you better?

We want to make it feel that these adventures can hurt…

As for the Capaldi Doctor, don’t expect a Time Lord who is your best friend and is yearning to be loved. This renegade has his own agenda. “He’s not as immediately approachable and he’s not necessarily looking for your approval,” Moffat explained.

I would like to restore the sense that when he says ‘Wait here, I’ll be back’ you really hope he’ll be back, but you’re not absolutely convinced… What he’s not doing is reassuring you very much.

That also translates to a new dynamic between the Doctor and his trusty companion Clara, as this new regeneration has resulted in a Gallifreyan who is even more alien than usual:

From a Doctor she could sort of control, because he had a crush on her, she’s landed with a Doctor who barely registers that she’s a girl. They’re great friends and all that but she has to be his human interface with everybody else.

There’s just a month to go now before Doctor Who returns to the small flat screen. And a time machine would be rather bloody handy right about now, so that I wouldn’t have to wait for it.
