Rumour: ASSASSIN'S CREED plot details revealed

4 min read

Just a few days ago, star/producer Michael Fassbender provided a much needed update on video game adaptation Assassin’s Creed, saying that things are still progressing as planned, and they were busy ironing out the last few story points. What these and the already wrinkle-free story points are, he wouldn’t say. Which of course meant that fans went digging. One such fan is Patrick Dane over at Film Divider, and he’s seemingly unearthed a whole bunch of details through his sources.

Now since none of this has been confirmed, it’s technically still just a rumour, but on the off-chance that it does turn out to be true (and I must admit, there is a tang of legitimacy to this) I’m throwing up a great big SPOILER WARNING! If you don’t want to know any potential spoilers, then I suggest that after checking out this cool video produced by game developers Ubisoft on what Assassin’s Creed: Unity‘s crazy parkour death dealing would look in real life, and which I am using as a SPOILER buffer, you promptly just close this window down. For the rest of you, scroll down for the goods (also, you may want to watch the video).

Just a refresher/intro: In the game, Desmond Miles is a bartender in the near future, who discovers that he’s a member of a group of Assassins that have spent centuries fighting against the megalomaniacal Templars, who are set on world domination. Miles is found by the Abstergo corporation, secretly a front for the Templars, who use a device called the Animus to unlock his genetic memory and allow him relive the lives of his past ancestors, so as to find clues to unravelling the mysteries of group of powerful artifacts left behind behind by a godlike race that predate humanity on Earth.

According to Dane’s sources, the movie will not be adapting any of the games in the franchise, but will instead be crafting a new story that potentially could just slot into the existing timeline created by the canon. This new story will also make use of the dual eras gimmick found in the games, with Fassbender in fact playing two different roles.

“I’ve learned that Michael Fassbender will play two roles in the film. In the present-day sections he will be Michael Lynch, a death row inmate who becomes a pawn in the Assassins-Templars war; while in the segments set in the past, he will be Aguilar de Agarorobo, an assassin during the Spanish Inquisition. Both this time period and location are so far unexplored by the main games in the series.

In the present day scenes, Michael will be subject to tests by a researcher called Joseph who is a bit of a baddie. Michael won’t be totally on his own, though, as he’ll be helped by a female Assassin named Lara. And it seems likely that whoever gets cast in that role will also show up in the past sections as another character, presumably one of Lara’s ancestors.

There’s one idea that’s similar to Assassin’s Creed 2, where protagonist Ezio Auditore’s father was an important member of the assassin’s creed. This time, Aguilar’s father will be an assassin chief.

Speaking of Assassin’s Creed 2, the chief bad guy in the movie is going to be Tomas de Torquemada. Interestingly this isn’t the first time this historical figure has turned up in the Assassin’s Creed franchise having appeared in an offshoot, the iOS and Nintendo DS spin-off Assassin’s Creed 2: Discovery. In that game, de Torquemada was working under Rodrigo Borgia, the main antagonist of Assassin’s Creed 2. Whether the movie will take this lesser known game as canon is currently unclear from the information at hand.

The boss bad guy in the present day will be Alan Rikkan, CEO of Abstergo, the corporate front for the evil Templars. At the moment, the plan is for him to appear in voice over only, which is not unlike the games where Rikkan has so been a fairly ambiguous force.”

All of that actually sounds pretty good, and very easy to align with the events of the game. If true, it would also be the first time we’ve actually seen anything set in our present timeline, with thus far only the near future and distant past being explored in the games. Dane goes on to posit that it could also be that these newly explored eras will actually also be used in future games, may be set during the Spanish Inquisition.

I’m always intrigued whenever Fassbender is involved in a project. Couple that with Assassins Creed’s cinematic narrative potential and the fact that developer Ubisoft are not just handing this property over to somebody who doesn’t get the game, but are doing all of this in-house, and this could be the first video game adaptation in a very long time that I’m not only excited for, but which could actually turn out damn good.

A female assassin? Wow, they’re really not keeping to canon now are they. 😉

That sounds pretty good, like the fact they’re going with new characters in the existing universe. Gives them some creative freedom & spares them (a bit) from nitpicking fan boys.
