Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

We all know what this is about, so I’m not going to bother with a full synopsis. They’re mutant turtle teenagers trained by a mutant rat to be ninjas, to fight the evil Shredder and The Foot clan, that about covers it. So, let’s talk about the controversy surrounding this movie’s existence instead!

Nothing is more powerful than nostalgia. On the one hand, you’ve got a generation of people that grew up with something awesome, and want the new generation to see how awesome it is. On the other hand, you’ve got the protective, leave-my-childhood-alone curators of memory. Generally, neither side is going to be completely happy no matter what happens, but if you don’t like the idea of this reboot then… don’t go watch it. Simple!

If you’re on the fence about seeing it, then you can read Trevor’s review, where he gave it a solid 3/5. The action is fast and furious, the CGI is impressive and the humour is top-notch. It’s a simple, fun-filled action movie that’s perfect for introducing the Turtles to a younger generation.

Snowpiercer

From director Bong Joon Ho comes Snowpiercer, an epic sci-fi thriller about what happens to humanity after a failed global-warming experiment kills off most life on the planet. The final survivors board the Snowpiercer, a train that travels around the globe via a perpetual-motion engine. When cryptic messages incite the passengers to revolt, the train thrusts full-throttle towards disaster.

While Snowpiercer is getting rave reviews across the board, most critics are reluctant to give anything away about the plot. It seems like it’s the kind of movie best viewed without any preconceptions. So, if you trust the 95% average on Rotten Tomatoes, this is the movie to go see this weekend.

This Is Where I Leave You

Based on the best-selling novel by Jonathan Tropper, This Is Where I Leave You is an ensemble comedy drama about four grown siblings, bruised and banged up by their respective adult lives, are forced to return to their childhood home and live under the same roof together for a week after their father passes away.

Despite an all-star cast of Jason Bateman, Tina Fey and Jane Fonda, you might want to lower your expectations. Critics are calling This Is Where I Leave You bland and sanitised, and while it skirts the edges of having depth and being thought-provoking, it’s ultimately just… safe.

The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared

Based on the novel by Jonas Jonasson, The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared is the unlikely story of a 100-year-old man who decides it’s not too late to start over. For most people it would be the adventure of a lifetime, but Allan Karlsson’s unexpected journey is not his first. For a century he’s made the world uncertain, and now he is on the loose again.

While the title is quite robust, I really have no idea what this movie is about. Billed as a comedy-drama, critics are split down the middle on whether it’s actually funny or not, giving it an average of 67% on Rotten Tomatoes. Some say it’s too slapstick while others have been swayed by its ramshackle, absurdist humour and charm.

Snowpiercer is goooooooood. 11/10 will watch… for a 4th time. There will be a slightly spoilery review soon.

It & TMNT couldn’t be any more different movies even if they tried.

Not gonna lie, the combination of Bay and Fox has me terrified about TMNT. Clearly I fall into the “leave my memories alone” category.
Kinda surprised Snowpiecer got a 95% RT average and what does Evans have against warm weather, seriously…
