If you had to travel back in time and tell the me from 2006 that not only would the Fast and The Furious franchise still be going strong in 8 years time, but it would be a box office juggernaut and that I would be eagerly anticipating the next installment, I would probably have pimp-slapped you before having you committed to a mental asylum. But here we are in 2014, feverishly talking about Fast & Furious 7, which has just found itself receiving a new name.

The fifth entry in the franchise – easily the best of the lot – broke from tradition and instead boasted the much shorter title of Fast 5 (Possibly a sly nod to the movie’s Ocean’s Eleven leanings). The next film seemed to be revert back to the title status quo though as it was billed in marketing as Fast & Furious 6. There was some confusion though when the film’s onscreen title revealed it to be Furious 6, which according to Justin Lin, director of movies 3 to 6, was the official title.

“It was always designed to be ‘Fast Five’ and ‘Furious Six’. ‘Furious Six’ was going to be a kind of culmination and wrap-up of ‘Fast & Furious’ itself. I had it that way and that’s the way it’s going to be.”

And it seems that when Lin handed over the directing reins of the seventh film to James Wan, he handed over the love of that particular title as well, as the upcoming Fast & Furious 7 has now been renamed to Furious 7. (I can’t wait for Furious-er 8!). The announcement came with the movie’s first official banner poster, which you can see below:

Along with that banner, the film’s first synopsis has also been revealed, though it’s fairly light on story details. And by “fairly light”, I mean non-existent.

Continuing the global exploits in the unstoppable franchise built on speed, Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson lead the returning cast of Furious 7. James Wan directs this chapter of the hugely successful series that also welcomes back favorites Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Elsa Pataky and Lucas Black. They are joined by international action stars new to the franchise including Jason Statham, Djimon Hounsou, Tony Jaa, Ronda Rousey and Kurt Russell. Neal H. Moritz, Vin Diesel and Michael Fottrell return to produce the film written by Chris Morgan.

On top of that, the film’s Facebook page has revealed that the first trailer will be dropping in one week’s time. Until then, videos will be released daily to count down until the trailer release. The first two of these vids – one taking a quick glimpse behind the scenes look at Furious 7 and another looking back at highlights from the the entire saga up to this point – has already been released and you can check them out below.

I am a little disappointed as I was actually hoping that that “Road to Furious 7” vid would give a breakdown of the franchise’s timeline for those folks that didn’t hang around to watch the post-credits scene to Furious 6 and don’t know how the story ties together now, all the way back from Tokyo Drift to Furious 7. Yes, a movie that just began life as “dudes drive fast cars”, now has an overarching narrative that spans 4 movies. Who would have thunk it?

Furious 7 is scheduled for release on March 4, 2015.

#8 will just be “And 8” seeing as both “fast” and “furious” have already been used.

He had already filmed half his scenes. They rewrote the script to allow him out of the story – not dying though, as that would be kinda disrespectful – and then used a combination of CGI and his two brothers acting as doubles to complete everything. His one brother has almost the exact same build while the other has a spooky accurate facial resemblance, so they were able to pull it off depending on what the scene called for.

        thats good to hear.
Paul Walker IS f&f, so having a respectful way out with help from his family is awesome.
