Ascension is Syfy’s upcoming six hour science fiction mystery drama event (kitchen sink) miniseries that Kervyn first mentioned here. Featuring a large ensemble cast headlined by Battlestar Galactic alum Tricia Helfer it marks their first foray into outer space in many years, and now the first trailer has dropped.

Official plot synopsis and trailer follow:

In 1963, the U.S. government launched a covert space mission sending hundreds of men, women and children on a century-long voyage aboard the starship Ascension to populate a new world. Nearly 50 years into the journey, as they approach the point of no return, a mysterious murder of a young woman causes the ship’s population to question the true nature of their mission.

Love the music choice, not a fan of the rapid cuts with black fades though. But damn, that does look good. They’ve clearly not skimped on the effects and set design, which is often one of the complaints leveled at Syfy. Intense action and drama on a tin can in space makes me happy, and given that it’s a short event series with a definite end we shouldn’t expect much waffle. While the final proof will be in the watching, if this is the kind of quality that we can expect from future event miniseries, then future is looking bright indeed.

The idea that the entire mission itself is covert makes my conspiracy sense tingle though – what if they’re all really on the moon in some kind of simulator as part of a science experiment to determine what would happen if such a mission was really launched? What do you think – am I crazy, or the right kind of crazy?

Ascension consists of six hour-long episodes and will air two hour-long episodes on consecutive days on Syfy starting 15 December 2014. If you can bypass the region locking there’s more information on the impressive looking set design, the science behind the show and cast interviews here via Youtube.
