Robotech

If you were of a certain age in South Africa, then you most likely remember sitting your ass down in front of the television and tuning into Robotech in the early evening. The hit anime series had already conquered the west, paving the way for that animation to grow outside of Japan, and it eventually made its way to the most southern part of Africa, with some bonus simulcasting on Radio 2000. A re-edited combination of not one but three separate anime series (“The Super Dimension Fortress Macross,” “Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross” and “Genesis Climber MOSPEADA”) , Robotech was a hit here and internationally. And it’s been stuck in development hell for years as Hollywood has tried to get a big screen version of the cult classic onto movie screens.

Looks like that engine has been restarted however, as according to Deadline production has been picked up by Hollywood Gang Productions, the same company responsible for films such as Immortals, 300 and its 2014 sequel. Mark Canton and Gianni Nunnari will produce, with Michael “GI Joe: Rise Of Cobra” Gordon providing a screenplay. Even better, it appears that Mama director Andy Muschietti will helm the picture.

As I said, I love Robotech way too much. I caught on late to it, but binge-watching an animated epic that dealt with mankind’s war with an alien race hellbent on retrieving the protoculture energy source, waged with giant robots, was a massive winner to me. Here’s the original intro, to get your nostalgia racing:

  1. If I remember right it was on at 4pm on a Tuesday. I used to rush home from school & was a very sad panda if I didn’t make it in time.

Yes, then after it ended there was BattleTech (sadly only one season) on Saturday mornings.

Was such an awesome series (what I remember of it). Interested to see what they do with this… Hope it’s better than Pacific Rim (it had its moments… But just didn’t gel for me)!
