Lucy Lawless joins the EVIL DEAD tv series

2 min read

Television adaptations of movies generally go down badly and I am still reeling from the tedious and over-indulgent pilot for From Dusk ‘Till Dawn. Maybe it got better, but an hour was enough for me to spend my time elsewhere. Yet the Evil Dead tv series, currently called Ash vs The Evil Dead, is shaping up with a lot of potential.

Firstly, it’s going to be on Starz, which was also home to another show produced by Evil Dead creator Sam Raimi, namely Spartacus. You know, that historical drama that went out of its way to set new benchmarks for violence, sex and slow-motion bloodletting on television. And it killed – the only show that probably retains its laurels for pushing the vulgarity envelope is Deadwood and its infamous profanity.

With a channel that has no idea what holding back means, Evil Dead is bound to be a festival of over the top gore, as it should be (and Raimi has confirmed as much).

Bruce Campbell will be returning as the hero Ash, the main protagonist in the three original Evil Dead movies. Now we know he is joined by Lucy Lawless, best known for her roles in Spartacus and Xena: Warrior Princess (also a Raimi production). Spartacus revived Lawless’ career and showed she still has a large and manic fan base. Her appearance as Ruby, a character hellbent on stopping the Deadite scourge at its source (and believing Ash had a part to play in that), is exciting news.

The show takes place a few decades after the events of Army Of Darkness, though probably sans the ending. Deadites have risen again to take over the world and Ash takes them on. Campbell has painted the character as an emotionally-stunted loser who ended up in a trailer park (so kinda his portrayal of himself in My Name Is Bruce). That means Ash never grew up – and it’s exactly how fans would want it. Here’s the synopsis:

The STARZ Original series Ash vs Evil Dead will be 10 half-hour episodes. Bruce Campbell will be reprising his role as Ash, the stock boy, aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter who has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead. When a Deadite plague threatens to destroy all of mankind, Ash is finally forced to face his demons –personal and literal. Destiny, it turns out, has no plans to release the unlikely hero from its “Evil” grip.

Groovy, baby.
