Bigger, bolder and meaner. No, I’m not talking about Nick after I’ve stolen his Friday muffins, I’m talking about the real star of Jurassic World. I’m talking about the Indominus Rex, an unholy fusion of 65 million years worth of evolved fury and marketing.

Jurassic World’s big bad ain’t nothing to fool with, as the film will introduce the hybrid hazard of creating a new species of dinosaur based on marketing management ideas. Speaking to EW, director Colin Trevorrow explained that we won’t see this particular bad boy in a museum any time soon:

No, it’s not a real dinosaur. The Indominus was meant to embody our worst tendencies. We’re surrounded by wonder and yet we want more. And we want it bigger, faster, louder, better. And in the world of the movie the animal is designed based on a series of corporate focus groups. Like in the same way a lot of movies are. They sit a bunch of people down and they ask them, “What can we do to make the dinosaurs more entertaining for you? What would make you tell a friend to come to Jurassic World?” And their answer is, of course, “We want to see something bigger, faster, louder, more vicious; we want a killer.” And they get what what they ask for.

So what kind of DNA does the Indominus Rex have floating in its blood? Only the biggest, nastiest and cleverest animals contributed to its design. A design that also included modern day wildlife charateristics:

It’s a hybrid of specific dinosaurs with great movie names like the Giganotosaurus and Majungasaurus, as well as other animals that exist in the world today, with certain attributes that Dr. Wu [B.D. Wong] felt would create the ultimate piece of entertainment.

And this is where things get meta, as the Indominus Rex is in itself a sly reference to the current trends in making movies today:

Yeah, we live in a cult of the upgrade right now. There’s always something around the corner that will make whatever you think is cool right now feel obsolete. And I feel like the Indominus Rex is the animal version of that.

Like the clever girl that it is, Jurassic World is out on June 12. Here’s the theme to the film, played horribly so that you can get excited about it:
