Meet DEADPOOL's teenage sidekick in new pics; plus creators talk "hard R" tone

In case you haven’t noticed, Deadpool is not your typical comic book character. So of course he doesn’t have your typical comic book sidekick. At least when it comes to her name. Negasonic Teenage Warhead – named after a song by 90’s punk rockers Monster Magnet – was created by regular comic book madmen Grant Morrison and Frank Quietly as a minor X-Men character, but in the upcoming Deadpool movie she’s stepping up big time as the slightly unhinged compadre of Ryan Reynolds totally unhinged hero. And thanks to Empire, we now have a pic of the two side-by-side, probably about to cause some mayhem.

Negasonic Teenage Warhead – henceforth known simply as Nega just to speed things up – will be played on-screen by newcomer Brianna Hildebrand. Her look is quite the departure from her very conservative appearance in the comics, so it’s uncertain just how much the two versions will differ. Real name Ellie Phimister, Nega was historically a shy telepath and student of famed X-Men telepath Emma Frost. Other than having some visions about an upcoming disaster that saved some mutant lives, she never really featured much in the comics, so writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (Zombieland) could pretty much take her character in any direction.

As for the movie overall, the one direction you should definitely expect it to go is down. As in into the gutters. And maybe to some other places that leave you feeling a bit icky. That’s because the film will not be shying away from Deadpool’s more crazy, off the wall, and shall we say, mature content, as producer Simon Kinberg explained.

“Deadpool is a hard R. It’s graphic. Nothing is taboo. You either commit to a truly outrageous boundary-pushing kind of movie or you don’t.”

Director Tim Miller – who previously was a VFX guy who among other things, designed the amazing CGI intro sequence for David Fincher’s Girl With the Dragon Tattoo – echoes this taboo-eschewing statement, revealing to EW that he’s drawing from a different Fincher project for some inspiration for the manic Deadpool.

“I felt Fight Club and Tyler Durden were good corollaries. We are in strip clubs and dive bars and crappy apartments and far away from the shiny X-Men world.”

Miller also revealed the additional image up above of Reynolds in costume as Deadpool, after he’s just finished shooting up some folks. Shooting not sucking face. Though the latter is definitely something that the actor wants to do to you. You, being the person who leaked the Deadpool test reel footage online last year.

Up until that point, Reynolds – who had played an unforgivably neutered and bastardized version of the character in the abortive X-Men Origins: Wolverine – had been struggling to get a Deadpool solo movie off the ground for years to no avail. However, when footage of a test reel shot by Miller was leaked online by unknown parties, the response from the public was so overwhelmingly positive that the studios finally listened and greenlit the film.

And Reynolds wants to pay back the person who did it with a very special kiss.

“And not just a little kiss, but full on the mouth, sloppy, with tongue, for two straight minutes on live television, without commercial interruption. And then I’ll buy you dinner at Red Lobster, at least, and dessert.”

Deadpool also stars TJ Miller as Weasel, Gina Carano as Angel Dust, Morena Baccharin as Copycat and Ed Skrein as Ajax, and is scheduled for release on February 12, 2016.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

  1. Even though Hydra is part of the MCU, wouldn’t mind seeing Bob make an appearance.
