I haven’t seen the new Scream TV series yet, as the whole self-aware slasher thing just doesn’t do it for me any more. But it looks I’m going to take another stab (heh heh) at the genre thanks to The Final Girls. Not to be confused with The Final Girl, an actual slasher flick starring Abigail Breslin that is totally unaware of itself, the meta-parody The Final Girls was a huge favourite at this year’s SXSW Festival, apparently walking the fine line between horror and humour really well.

The film is sort of the slasher equivalent of Last Action Hero, as a young girl (Taissa Farmigia) and her friends end up trapped in the very same slasher movie that her deceased mother (Malin Ackerman) starred in, but director Todd Strauss-Schulson and screenwriters M. A. Fortin and Joshua John Miller apparently turn in an extremely clever flick that knows exactly when to wink at the audience and when to thrill. This results in a very unique horror movie that just looks like a ton of fun. Check out the trailer below.

When Max (Taissa Farmiga) and her friends reluctantly attend an anniversary screening of Camp Bloodbath, the infamous 80s horror film that starred Max’s late mother (Malin Akerman), they are mysteriously sucked into the silver screen. They soon realize they are trapped inside the cult classic movie and must team up with the fictional and ill-fated camp counselors, including Max’s mom as the scream queen, to battle the films machete-wielding killer. With the body count rising in scene after iconic scene, who will be the final girls left standing and live to escape this film?

The Final Girls is scheduled for release on VOD and in limited theatres on October 9, 2015.
