SA’s Weekend Top 10: Blink and you (don't) miss (much)

The sailors are still staring at the flat seas, nary a wind or even a gale in sight. Okay, enough sea talk. But this gives me a neat if lazy gap to my column last week, so full sails ahead.

Sorry.

Last week the charts were stuck in the doldrums and it wasn’t hard to guess that nobody was going to drop a big fish in the pond a week ahead of the new Hunger Games.

Hey, fish appear in fresh water too, you know.

This week pretty much held up that bargain, though there are a few surprise shifts. For a change we can start right at the bottom with the tenth position. After falling of the charts last week, The Perfect Guy is back. This thriller has been punching above its weight for most of its run and I think it’s my underdog of the year. The movie re-emerged again for one more run at the charts and it is likely to hang around in the larger cinema complexes for a while..

the perfect guy

Since we’re at the back, we might as well look at it from this perspective for a change. At ninth is the first of a couple of movies that didn’t change places. The Martian is still where it was last week and might just have one more weekend left before it’s gone. Make that two weeks and Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, which stayed put at seventh, might still share a chart with its big sister, The Hunger Games. And the top spots – first and second – remained respectively with Goosebumps and Bridge of Spies.

Starting at fourth, Hotel Transylvania 2, Burnt (5th) and Dis Ek Anna (6th) also dropped one position from last week, thanks to an arrival of marsupial proportions.

blinky bill

Blinky Bill is a very popular kid’s cartoon character from down under, so much so that he even has an Aussie postage stamp. Starting as a series of books, he’s had his share of television and movie appearances. But this new release is the koala’s CG movie debut, settling in at number three.

Another character with ample chest hair made its debut at the eighth spot. Fortunately I’m not referring to Salma Hayek or Jessica Alba, but Pierce Brosnan. The three star in How To Make Love Like An Englishman, Brosnan being the titular character who plays a playboy professor in this slice of life comedy.

how to make love like an englishmanThe next three weeks are going to rock the chart with Hunger Games, Spectre and The Peanuts Movie. Then we’re just a hop away from Star Wars. So enjoy the silence while it lasts.

Three movies left the building this past weekend. You can still hear the echo of the calamitious flop Pan, followed closely by Crimson Peak‘s swandive from sixth to outta here. The dubbed animation Sneeukoningin also bows out after a brief chart entry last week.

Hotel Transylvania 2 remains the top overall earner with just over R17 million sown up.

Dammit. I spent the whole weekend playing Fallout and completely forgot I wanted to go see Hotel Transylvania.
