From Dark Knight to Knight of Cups? That seems to be the case for Christian Bale who takes the lead as a depressed Hollywood screenwriter whose life spirals out of control in Terrence Mallick’s upcoming Knight of Cups. Mallick is a bit of an acquired taste, with the 71-year old auteur’s tendencies to often place artistic, philosophical meanderings before narrative – hence why Brad Pitt ended up sharing screen time with dinosaurs and the Big Bang in Tree of Life.

And although the first trailer for Knight of Cups seems to show a more coherent “normal” story line, this is still Mallick we’re talking about here, so it also looks like it could all get very trippy and experimental very fast (I mean, just look at that official synopsis below!). But since it is indeed Mallick we’re talking about, it all still looks damn beautiful!

Check out the trailer below.

“Knight of Cups” is a story of a man, temptations, celebrity, and excess from director Terrence Malick (“The Tree of Life,” “The Thin Red Line”).

Once there was a young prince whose father, the king of the East, sent him down into Egypt to find a pearl. But when the prince arrived, the people poured him a cup. Drinking it, he forgot he was the son of a king, forgot about the pearl and fell into a deep sleep.

Rick’s (Christian Bale) father used to read this story to him as a boy.

The road to the East stretches out before him. Will he set forth?

As usual Mallick has attracted all the big names in Hollywood who all want to work with him, so starring alongside Bale is Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Antonio Banderas, Freida Pinto, Wes Bentley, Isabel Lucas, Teresa Palmer, Imogen Poots and Armin Mueller-Stahl among others. Knight of Cups is scheduled for limited release on March 4, 2016.
