Director Adam McKay wants ANCHORMAN III vs the Internet?

I’ve always had a bit of a mixed love affair with Ron Burgundy and his idiot entourage, much like I have with chicken livers and Trevor. They can be absolutely hysterical but then absolutely cringe worthy at the same time. The stories are really silly but are also so accessible you can’t help but giggle. Of course with a movie like Anchorman a sequel was bound to be a cut and paste deal much like the very slapstick Austin Powers (“Oh behave!”). Sorry, maybe I am being a bit harsh? Nope, not at all.

Now there is news via Time that writer and director Adam McKay has gone back on his original statement where he said there definitely wouldn’t be another Anchorman movie. In fact it sounds like he has been thinking about it for a while:

That was a little too harsh because the truth is, I really don’t know. With these movies, you really don’t know how they’ve played until about two years after they come out, when people see them on repeat viewing. That tends to be how our movies work,” [if] “Anchorman 2 gets that sort of second life, if three, four years from now people start asking us that question a lot and there’s an idea, we would be open to that.

Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy Q&A

That does make sense of course. Not every movie made is going to be a big hit on the big screen, sometimes waiting for the smaller screen to bring in the numbers can also add up to success. Going on McKay spoke to Yahoo Movies recently and added he had approached the idea with Will Ferrell himself:

We talked about doing one that was about the rise of the new media. I also thought there was something to the idea — and who knows, maybe we will do one some day — I also thought it’d be cool to have Ron Burgundy get embedded in the Iraq War. We kicked around that idea. But we’ve never got that serious about it, but it would have to be the next stage of what the media has become. And I think you’re right, I think it’s the internet. The only thing is by then Burgundy would be getting pretty old. So maybe it’s a movie we make in 10 years, when Will’s aged up and it actually makes sense that you can set it in 1997 or 98.

While I don’t like the idea of having a comedy in a war zone I love the idea of Burgundy going head to head with the internet. The idea of having some lunatic rant at the World Wide Web because he doesn’t understand it reminds me very much of, well, my older brother. And he’s so special he’s hysterical.

What do you think, is the world ready for another Anchorman?
