Due to the break we took recently, it’s been a few weeks since we last did a box office report. But really, you didn’t miss much since there’s essentially just been one story – really the only story – dominating the headlines: Star Wars: The Force Awakens shattering every box office record in front of it as it makes a push for Avatar’s all-time box office crown.

And trust me, James Cameron’s sci-fi Pocahontas/Smurfs mashup will fall to the power of the Force, at least when it comes to the domestic box office. The Force Awakens pulled in an estimated $88.3 million in the US in its third week of release this weekend past, which pushes its domestic total to $740.2 million. Not only is that just $20 million shy of Avatar‘s domestic record – a number it is surely to gain in the next day or two – but it also becomes the fastest film in US box office history to cross the $700 million mark, doing it in just 16 days. To put that achievement into even more perspective: it took Avatar 72 days to accomplish the same feat!

Over on the international front, The Force Awakens was just as record-breaking as it added an additional $93 million to its coffers, pushing its global tally to $770 million. Combined that means after 19 days of international release, it’s sitting on $1.510 billion giving it the title of the 6th highest grossing film of all time, and also the fastest to ever reach $1.5 billion (and it still needs to open in the world’s second biggest movie market: China). And it’s probably only a matter of a day or two at most before it passes both Furious 7 ($1.515 billion) and Marvel’s The Avengers ($1.519 billion) to claim the 4th spot on the all-time global box office chart!

And all of this means that every other movie out there currently is merely picking up all the scraps from The Force Awakens‘ table, and with one exception, they’re all doing a pretty dismal job of it. And somehow, that exception is a Will Ferrell comedy.

Daddy’s Home, the comedy that sees Ferrell as boring step-dad who competes for the affections of his kids with their ultra cool biological dad played by Mark Wahlberg, has somehow managed to hang right in there in the two weeks it’s been on the circuit. This weekend past saw it pull in a respectable $29 million, with only a slight drop in revenue since its opening weekend, giving it a domestic total of $93 million in just 10 days. That’s actually very impressive, especially when considering that the movie only has a $50 million price tag.

Another strong comedy showing featuring two funny actors are the Tina Fey and Amy Poehler driven Sisters which is still hanging around, having just dropped off 11% for a $12.58 million dollar 3rd week haul. So too family friendly Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip is also sticking it out with its $11.8 million effort.

Unfortunately for the rest of the US box office charts, things are looking much less impressive. Quentin Tarantino’s critically lauded western The Hateful Eight may actually have outperformed the previous two movies with its $16.2 million 2nd week tally (after it expanded into over 2300 more theatres), but it actually fell short of the $20 million prediction the studio had. Both Tarantino and The Weinstein Company have now already issued statements saying that Star Wars is really hurting their box office. I guess, lightsabers trump six shooters right now.

Let’s see what’s happening on the rest of the US chart at the moment.

  • 1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens – $88.3 million (LW: 1st)
  • 2. Daddy’s Home – $29 million (LW: 2nd)
  • 3. The Hateful Eight – $16.2 million (LW: 10th)
  • 4. Sisters – $12.58 million LW: 4th)
  • 5. Alvin & the Chipmunks: The Road Chip – $11.8 million (LW: 5th)
  • 6. Joy – $10.3 million (LW: 3rd)
  • 7. The Big Short – $9 million (LW: 6th)
  • 8. Concussion – $8 million (LW: 7th)
  • 9. Point Break – $6.84 (LW: 8th)
  • 10. The Hunger Games: MockingJay – Part 2 – $4.62 million (LW: 9th)

With The Force Awakens opening in the massive China market this coming Saturday, you can probably expect some more records to go toppling next week.
