We have previously reported that Akira is currently in development for a movie trilogy with esteemed director Christopher Nolan involved in turning the popular Anime series into a cinematic reality. While according to Geek Tyrant, the film might not still be in the works, but that a TV series is looking to be developed on the source material instead.

Legendary manga author and anime director Katsuhiro Otomo, recently spoke at a comics festival Angouleme in Paris, where when asked about the possibility of another adaptation of Akira, he suggested that it was current “under study” (being considered) for a TV series.

There is no mention as to what type of TV series this might be, whether it is animated or live-action, but I do find it a little surprising that it is headed to the TV screen and not to the big screen. He did not say that the film is not happening though, so perhaps it is still under development, but without much involvement from Otomo himself.

Hopefully we’ll be able to uncover more of what is happening with either this series or the movie trilogy in the near future and get more details on what can be expected from further adaptations of this franchise. Either way, it seems people see the potential of expanding on this material and hopefully whatever we get out of it does the original justice.

I can’t for the life of me see Akira as a TV series. This is not as rich in story as Ghost in the Shell was and even that had some hiccups. But then again we got Tachikoma-kun so it all worked out in the end.
