Rumour: Marvel planning a 20th Century Fox crossover?

We recently shared news of how Sony wants to still do a Spider-Man movie universe with Marvel, especially after the success Marvel had in revealing the character in Captain America: Civil War. The co-producing deal was a first for both studios, neither of which were happy with the reception the character had gotten in the latest The Amazing Spider-Man movies – not that Marvel had much choice as Sony owned the Spider-Man film rights. Both wanted to give the character the treatment they felt he needed by integrating him into the Marvel Cinematic Universe proper. And so far, it seems this new spin on the character has worked as Spider-Man was one of the defining characters from that Captain America movie and seems well set up for success in a film of its own.

It seems however, that there may be another collaboration on its way with Marvel rumoured to have discussed the possibility of cross-overs with 20th Century Fox too. Y’know, that same collaboration fans have been asking for for ages. Fox currently owns the film rights to the X-Men characters, Fantastic Four and the extremely popular Deadpool which was released earlier this year. And, Deadpool aside, with the last few films (Fantastic Four reboot and X-Men: Apocalypse) not being received very well by either critics or audiences, it seems Marvel may be able to get a handle of sorts on these franchises as well and possibly further integrating them into their own cinematic universe.

The rumour was sparked following an interview with Matt Key, a producer on Kevin Smith’s Fatman on Batman podcast, who shared the following in the latest episode of Collider Heroes:

I’ve heard from a few of my sources, my little birds, that Fox and Marvel have… kind of talked, but not really, but like there’s interest from Fox, like, ‘Ooh, y’know, what they did with Sony and Spider-Man is actually pretty cool, like, maybe…’ We’re years away from that ever possibly happening… but I think that’s what it would take… Fox joining hands with Marvel…

So, it’s a pretty weak rumour to say the least and doesn’t sound like anything concrete, but if true could open up a world of exciting possibilities in the cinema world. The only issue I can see with this though is that the X-Men on their own is already an established franchise and there is no clear way they would be able to integrate the two without rebooting them completely. I’m not so sure the world would be willing to accept another version of the X-Men especially after being inundated with two separate versions of the characters over the past 15 years and also the majority of the film characters well loved, especially Jackman’s Wolverine.

Fantastic Four could certainly do with a much better adaptation, but if they do get integrated into the Marvel Universe, again I wouldn’t be surprised if they take the same approach they did with Spider-Man and avoid any introduction story of the character after we’ve seen it twice already in recent times. Then there is the popular Deadpool character, but with it being the one big shining success from Fox’s Marvel world of late, I can’t see them giving it up.

What do you make of this potential rumour – what type of crossover between Fox and Marvel would you like to see?

Bring Wolverine (Hugh Jackman of course) into an Avengers movie. That would be awesome, and he has said in the past as well he hoped it could happen. Other X-Men characters…not really. Wolverine has been established for so long that we all could know instantly who this guy is and where he comes from so no backstory needed! Hmmm perhaps a cameo by Xavier as well.
