If there are two young actors on a tear through Hollywood at the moment it’s Miles Teller and Jonah Hill. The two are teaming up with The Hangover director Todd Phillips for War Dogs – a based-on-a-true-story movie about two young men who wound up becoming international arms dealers by accident.

It’s based on a 2011 Rolling Stone article by Guy Lawson about the experiences of David Packouz (Teller) and Efraim Diveroli (Hill) that makes for a crazy read and is proof that fact is often stranger than fiction; and that tenderpreneurship isn’t corruption – it’s the American Dream, baby!

The official plot synopsis is as follows:

Based on a true story, “War Dogs” follows two friends in their early 20s (Hill and Teller) living in Miami Beach during the Iraq War who exploit a little-known government initiative that allows small businesses to bid on U.S. Military contracts. Starting small, they begin raking in big money and are living the high life.

But the pair gets in over their heads when they land a 300 million dollar deal to arm the Afghan Military—a deal that puts them in business with some very shady people, not the least of which turns out to be the U.S. Government.

If you’re looking for a nuanced take on America’s war in Afghanistan and the businesses supporting it, this isn’t it. This looks a solidly entertaining comedy about two young men completely out of their depth in that environment – which is rather fitting given how ridiculous the real story actually is. What do you think?

War Dogs is due for release in the US on 19 August. Directed by Todd Phillips, it stars Jonah Hill, Miles Teller, Bradley Cooper and Ana de Armas.
