There should be a new trailer for Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them dropping any day now, but like I mentioned last week, very few people seem to actually care (at least when it comes to relative online buzz). This film has serious star pedigree and a very good franchise legacy, but maybe it’s the fact that this Harry Potter spinoff/prequel doesn’t actually feature any Harry Potter (it’s set in America before he was born) that could be putting fans off. Maybe people just don’t know what to expect?

And director David Yates – who helmed four out of the eight Potter films – seems to think that is a good thing, as he explained (via /Film) during a red carpet interview for his latest flick Legend of Tarzan.

No one quite has ownership of [the story] yet in terms of having a relationship with the material, other than the relationship they’ll have with the movie when it comes out. So, it’s sort of lovely in a way. When we adapted the [Harry Potter] books, you would have to leave things out that you hated leaving out because they didn’t quite work within the structure of the storytelling of the movie or the movie would just be far too long. With this, it’s just pure Jo from the first page to the last page.

The “Jo” he is referring to is of course JK Rowling, the creator and author of the Harry Potter book series who is taking a more active role in the movie adaptation side this time around as she actually penned the screenplay for Fantastic Beasts – a first for her. And definitely not the last as Yates revealed that when it comes to planned sequels “She’s done the first one. She’s written the second one. She’s got ideas for the third one.”

Warner Bros have made no secret of that the fact that they’re hoping Fantastic Beasts will kick off a whole new billion dollar franchise for them, but this is the first official confirmation of their trilogy plans. Of course those plans will be completely worthless if nobody actually bothers to watch this first movie!

You can watch the full interview with Yates below:

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler, Ezra Miller, Samantha Morton, Jenn Murray, Faith Wood-Blagrove, Colin Farrell, Jon Voight, Carmen Ejogo, Gemma Chan and Ron Perlman. It is scheduled for release on November 18, 2016.

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” is an all-new adventure returning us to the wizarding world created by J.K. Rowling. Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne (“The Theory of Everything”) stars in the central role of wizarding world magizoologist Newt Scamander, under the direction of David Yates, who helmed the last four “Harry Potter” blockbusters.

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.
