Sony’s done a great job of keeping a lid on all the PS4 features and contents until it decides to tell the world but for once something has leaked and it’s not all great.
Let’s take a look at what you will receive if you are pre-ordering a PlayStation 4 for later this year.
First off we see that once again we have an internal power brick which is fantastic news. We are also getting one controller, an HDMI cable and a USB cable bundled in.
So far so good.. but what is that ugly cheap looking earpiece thing?
Time for a closer look
Look how cheap and nasty that thing looks, I was all excited when I heard that the PlayStation 4 would finally be bundling a headset but come on Sony that is the cheapest nastiest looking headset I’ve seen in a very long time.
I’m trying to think of a positive spin to end the article on… I guess they aren’t trying to kick SteelSeries and Turtle Beach out the market by releasing this? It’s something.

I guess its just another way of keeping the price down.

Personally, they could have just NOT included a headset of any kind. Xbox One aren’t. I would have preferred not getting a cheapie headset. It feels wasteful.

So its really just an added bonus, albeit a cheap and nasty one.

it’ll end up like all the cell phone headsets i’ve ever gotten, in a bottom of a draw somewhere!

I believe the stand is the only thing that isn’t confirmed.
I’m fine with that headset – it’s bundled in for free and seems to have helped keep the console at a great price.

June 27, 2013 at 11:14
Agreed. MS headset sold separately.
Skyblue
June 27, 2013 at 12:57
That’s because with the new Kinect you don’t really even need a headset anymore.

Gavin, that cant even be called a headset. And people were moaning about the MS one……this is WAAAY worse.

June 27, 2013 at 11:07
That’s more of an ear piece than a headset =/
Mathias
June 27, 2013 at 11:07
Well, it just took them one whole gen to start including a HDMI cable… Cheap bastards. All of ’em.

June 27, 2013 at 11:07
Each to their own I guess since I love the whole package. The earpiece doesn’t bother me in the least.

Wonder if my turtle beach headset will work with my PS4?
Martin du preez
June 27, 2013 at 11:11
It will. Nothing in the PS4 preventing that.
Martin du preez
June 27, 2013 at 11:10
Probably 90% of people that will buy this already own headsets that will be fully compatible with the PS4. So it’s a nice thing for someone new to online gaming to have included in the box if they want to check out online.
And people with their 2000k xbox360 headsets will have to re-buy when they get the ONE lmao
Callum Mclachlan
June 27, 2013 at 11:10
Excuse me, the headset is free, what more can you expect? The xbox has no bundled headset that I know of.

It doesn’t? Pffft, gen won.

Erm, dude, yes the Xbox One DOES. It’s called the Kinect and ONLY costs you $99! LMAO! Not sure why people are moaning about a fee earpiece… Are we all that spoilt now? Just thinking about it I am now thoroughly pissed off they have NOT included the lost city of Atlantis too!

Well rather the PS4 heaset than that Call Centre Headset from xbox i would still need to pay for
Sentient_Slug
June 27, 2013 at 12:05
Yip people seem to be forgetting that this earpiece is a free bonus to support the functionality of the controller and that the MS one is a paid product.
RinceWind
June 27, 2013 at 11:13
Eh? I would suggest this is why it is cheaper, by the Xbox One doesn’t even come with a headset…
Deano
June 27, 2013 at 11:15
its has kinect with a built in mic hence the price.
RinceWind
June 27, 2013 at 11:16
Yeah, but if you want to play at 2am and not wake the kids, you will want to use a headset/earpiece. Don’t get me wrong, the MS headset looks rather damn nice, but it is sold separately.
Deano
June 27, 2013 at 11:19
With the look of this thing you’d need to shout as loud for it to work.
Either way its poor showing, point at MS to justify it doesnt make it any better.
RinceWind
June 27, 2013 at 11:20
I am not justifying it by pointing at MS. I am saying it is a freebie, so I am not complaining. And MS expects me to pay an extra $99 for my mic and sensors etc so that is not a freebie. It is a must.

June 27, 2013 at 11:28
Now this is true! LOL. It is a cheap ass looking Fisherprice looking thing. But as I said. Not got a major problem with it as it doesn’t cost me $99 🙂
Deano
June 27, 2013 at 12:17
no one is charging $99 for a headset.
MS are giving you a kinect system for 99$ that has the added function of a mic, so that makes it okay.

According to the companies who sell consoles no one does. That’s why it’s so damn difficult to find a racing game with split screen anymore. Luckily GT5 has it.

June 27, 2013 at 11:23
The positive you were looking for Gavin is that you can use any headset you want with the PS4, no proprietary bullshit.
Edit: This is also supposed to be used for voice chat, not as headphones.

June 27, 2013 at 11:23
Very good point. It looks like a standard headset plugin.

June 27, 2013 at 11:53
Doesn’t the controller have a built in mic? What those pepper shaker holes for then?
Spathi
June 27, 2013 at 12:14
I’m not sure if it is a speaker or a mic? I think it’s a speaker?

June 27, 2013 at 12:41
a Speaker would seriously just be ridiculous? Why would they waste space on a controller for this? To start beeping when the LED has almost drained your power?
Spathi
June 27, 2013 at 12:49
I think it will convey in game sounds or certain sound effects. This is done quite good on the WiiU controller.

The Transistor (Bastion) devs were talking about having the sword speak through the DS4 speaker, and have the light bar resonate with his voice. Sounds like a neat implementation.

June 27, 2013 at 11:23
Well think about it How many console users of the 360 and ps3 generation arent using the headset for them and have gone for a turtle and tritton a while ago so hats off that sony even decided to bring a headset eventhough it might look like a flea market special its still a headset.Im sure they know most gamers have there own preference and in my opinion i believe the incl headset is for a new console gamer who doesnt posses a headset. Xboxs call centre headset which isnt included looks like a upgrade from the ugly previous version.Which we all know has problems but the old one was incl not the new one.You would have to upgrade for another piece of MS things that dont work properly

Cheap earpiece means cheaper console.
If you use headphones, it goes nicely over the ear with the earpiece in the ear.
If you like that around the ear blue tooth earpiece, then go buy one if you don’t already have one.
If you use a headset. can you see how easy it is to unplug and throw away the earpiece.
If you want the over the head earpiece with the mic down your throat while playing COD or FIFA on the Xbox One, then go buy one.
Sony is giving you the simple basic model. Sony is giving you the option to use what you want. Unlike Microsoft, where you would most likely have to go buy another Turtle Beach headset.
It’s all about ears. Can you hear me.

June 27, 2013 at 12:18
cheap and nasty is the term that comes to mind.

June 27, 2013 at 11:47
I love how people refer to it as a free headset. Its not free, you’re paying for it. Personally, I would rather pay R10 less and not have that earpiece.
John Ambitious
June 27, 2013 at 11:49
Or pay R10 more to have them leave it out and spare yourself the embarrassment of owning it.

I’m going for the bluetooth earpiece, especially one that makes me feel like James Bond.

its just a bonus, they are obviously not going to throw in an R800 headset, get real. Its just to support the functionality off the bat obviously. and you havent even heard the quality yet! gamers, always complaining.

FoxOneZA - X-Therminator

I hope the internals aren’t made cheap just to keep the price down. 8gb GDDR5 memory would be 75% the cost of the console.

Sony make some fine “cheap” headphones. I have 2 of them. They are lightweight, durable and only set me back R120 a few years back. Surely Sony could have included something similar in the package.
Melasco
June 27, 2013 at 12:38
I’m happy with it… I play my audio over my big speakers and will only use the ear piece for chat…. Imo, it’s perfect for that purpose… Not sure what else people expected?
Gavin Mannion
June 27, 2013 at 13:06
Pretty much expected a call center headset.. like the one that came with the Xbox 360 or the official Xbox One thing… I still have my original one. It’s not great but it’s way better that that rubbish
Melasco
June 27, 2013 at 13:32
Ah ok, makes sense. Yeah I dont like headsets in general, so maybe thats why I like the earpiece. I will spend the majority of my time in online games, so maybe I’ll change my mind, but for now I’ll be happy with that.

Well at least you can pretend to be a presidential bodyguard or a spy, with the unbundled Microsoft set you only get to be the bending over backwards insurance guy.

First we complain about teenagers swearing us online and then complain about the headset used to get sworn at…wtf!
Natty Dave
June 27, 2013 at 16:02
it looks like the hands free things that come with cheap cell phones, but regardless, if you really don’t like it, take the money you saved by buying a ps4 over an xbone and buy and nice head set, seems like a pretty simple solution to me anyway
nicksimp101
June 28, 2013 at 11:09
Michael Pachter reckons that the reason that Xbox got such a large online community with the 360 was because they bundled a headset with the console. Even though it is merely an earpiece with a mic, it is better than nothing…
