Aaron Greenberg, product director at Microsoft, is very confident that Kinect will be a huge success this holiday season.
Speaking with Gamasutra, Greenberg is expect strong sales of the Kinect hardware, somewhere in the 3 million units region. “Our estimates that we will sell in excess of 3 million units this holiday.”
Apparently, Microsoft are spending hundreds of millions in marketing, “exceeding in what we did when we launched the original Xbox 360.”.
Speaking about how Greenberg based his expectation of selling 3 million units, he said, “Our key indicators are feedback from retailers — I think you’d be surprised at how sophisticated they are, and they really have the pulse of the market. They’re looking at preorders, they’re talking to customers.” Obviously he isn’t referring to South African retailers.
“We’re also done our own research. We believe this will be the biggest launch in our history, for Xbox. We will sell more Kinect sensors than we did [systems] at Xbox 360 launch.”
“The launch lineup, I think when they personally experience these titles, first-hand, I think people will be impressed with level of depth, the amount of skill required, and how immersive they are, not just for new users, but for existing owners.”
Bold words there, Mr Greenberg.
If Microsoft keep quality ‘hardcore’ titles like Steel Battalion and Project Draco coming to Kinect, I expect it will gain a lot of traction with the hardcore gaming market.

It really depends on marketing, they’re already unleashing that little pubescent girl, Justin Bieber, and if Microsoft can convince Americans or the parents that Kinect is a worthy purchase then it might just be a success.
3 million, we’ll have to see.
