Activision has announced today that a new version of Call of Duty called Call of Duty online has been released exclusively in China for the princely sum of absolutely nothing.
Yes while we get to complain every year about paying R650 for a new Call of Duty the worlds next super power is getting to play it for free… but don’t fear it’s not as unfair as it sounds.
From what I have been able to make out this morning this new Call of Duty Online is, as the title says, an online version of the game and is a mash up of Modern Warfare 1 and 2 and will also feature an online micropayment system.
Though I’m not sure what that system is going to consist off? Pay 20 yuan to insult your competitors mother or 40 yuan to make up an insult regarding his dog and sister?
Apparently the game has been redesigned to suit a Chinese audience which I guess means the American’s lose this time and the Chinese are the good guys?
It will be interesting to see how this progresses and whether an online only version of the game supported by micro transactions will be a valid future business model for less developed countries?
