The formation of Image Comics, is still one of the biggest milestones in comic book industry history. Here was a radical shift in the status quo, as the hottest creators in the industry decided to band together and ditch the big two. Todd McFarlane, Jim Lee, Erik Larsen, Jim Valentino, Marc Silvestri and Rob Liefeld were all household names back then for fans of the great American art form.

Having a gang of rebels decide to ditch Marvel and DC to strike it out on their own however? That was unheard of back then. As was their main objective: To form a studio where the creators retained complete control over their projects and didn’t have to deal with any editorial interference. And in the early days, Image Comics became a serious contender. While Dark Horse and other indie publishers still had a presence, Image Comics had an impact.

For a while, comic book sales were divided among the big three, until things went pear-shaped. But these days? Some of the best comics can be found at Image. They’re now a studio that is home to some truly experimental stuff, titles which push the medium into new and welcome directions for anyone who has become jaded by the usual spandex superheroics of DC and Marvel.

And if you ever wanted to experience a different side of the medium, here’s the perfect entry point. The latest Humble Bundle is live, and it’s all focused on Image Comics. For a mere dollar, you’ll get the following goodies:

You might like the Luthor Strode series. Imagine the kickass series, but if directed by Quentin Tarantino.

Despite the incredibly interesting comics in this bundle, I can’t justify getting it to myself.
