Fallout shelter E3

Fallout 4 was a sure thing at the Bethesda event during E3. We all knew that we’d hear all about the game and probably get excited over some gameplay. But there was a cash grabbing gimmick announcement that wasn’t such a cash grab, and feels like more than a gimmick. In fact, it seems like a must play game reminiscent of Tiny Tower.

As the name implies, Fallout Shelter lets you build your own shelter. A free download on iOS, the game will cost you 200MB of data and possibly hours of your life. Build your underground community, keep them happy, keep up your resources, help them procreate and explore, and generally enjoy some Vault Simulator.

It looks absolutely adorable and I was instantly worried that it would be a pure cash grab. Yes, there are in-app purchases; of course they will need to try and make some money from it. However, there are no paywalls, no timers for things to build that can be sped up with money, and you can play the game offline, too. It’s as if Bethesda listened to me moan about all the issues I’ve had with recent free mobile games and turned them all on their head. I was sold on the game during the announcement and wanted it on my tablet ASAP; luckily, I didn’t have to wait at all.

Of course this will kill productivity, but it’s a good way to go. I’ve already loaded up my vault and I’m totally hooked. It’s cute and addictive in just the right way. Each achievement can unlock more caps (currency) or lunch boxes which yield four cards including rare items or survivors to join you. Lunch boxes can be purchased with real money, but it’s not necessary – I unlocked tons just by playing the game and progressing through the objectives. Oh, and you have to see the next level flirting that happens when you put a man and a woman together in a dwelling – procreation is a sure thing, but those pick up lines are something completely special.

Just be warned, before you know it, more time as passed than you might have planned on spending playing a mobile game. At least now I know how I’ll spend the many hours on the return flight home; the fact Bethesda made it offline capable makes it even more worthwhile. Who needs power, or internet when you can prepare for the end of days and manage your very own vault?

Usual reason: Android is so damned fragmented that it’s genuinely a nightmare to get anything running on it. It’s 20 times the amount of work to get something stable on Android. It’ll likely hit Android eventually, but it’ll take time. it always does.

Bethesda have won this years E3 without a doubt. No 2 year hype trains, no shitty CGI footage and no over the top expectations.

Just game play, great reveals and a release date 4 months from now. Simple and sweet.

Not just gameplay; some sweeeeeet gameplay. They’ve outdone themselves and they’ve outdone themselves right.

Their marketing team are on the ball. They realise that these 2-3 year hype trains just fall flat on their face, Watchdogs was good example of how to scorn a gamer. It may win sales on the day but after the gamer is left with a sour taste it dooms their future ambitions.

I bet The Division has lost allot of potential sales thanks to the rush job of Unity. Even if Ubisoft is only publishing the game, the fickle gamer will stay clear of Ubisoft from now on.

Bethesda, Rockstar and Naughty Dog (for the most part) do it right. They announce a game closer to completion in stead of hyping an unfinished product or, like Ubisoft, doing its best to soil my beloved memories of the early days of Assassin’s Creed with broken-must-release-annually-Creed games. And oh boy did Watch Dogs not disappoint with how disappointing my friend said it would be. Look, I’m not a developer, just like my dad isn’t a rugby coach and has no authority to yell at the bulls when they play a shit match (which is apparently all the time now), but Ubi shot themselves in the foot when they didn’t release the GREAT game they showed off originally. And yes, the Division will suffer because of this, which is a shame, because it seems that they are actually trying to make up for their mistakes.
