What we need now, is a Doctor. We’ve actually had three over the last eight years, but heck, there’s no harm in a fourth opinion. With Matt Smith announcing that he was leaving Doctor Who, the search was on again to find a replacement regeneration.
And a new Time Lord has been found! Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to the next Doctor, Peter Capaldi!
Capaldi is no stranger to the Doc Who universe, having appeared already in the fourth season episode The Fires of Pompei, an episode which also featured Karen Gillian in a small role before she was cast as the first companion for the Matt Smith Doctor, Amy Pond for season 5 of the series. “He’s not me yet, but he’s reaching out,” Capaldi said during the announcement special in which he was revealed as the next Doctor.
Capaldi aslo appeared in the spin-off series Torchwood, as UK minister John Frobisher. Adding some extra irony to the Whovian cake, Capaldi also played a different sort of dcotor for the W.H.O in World War Z. Capaldi may not be a household name yet, but the veteran actor has appeared in over 40 films and television shows throughout his career.
As for what the first adventure will be with Capaldi as the last of the Time Lords? Moffat has yet to reveal that info, but the audition scripts for the role point towards the Cybermen returning, leaving a newly regenerated Doctor no time to catch his breath as he finds himself thrust headfirst into yet another fight to save the day. So far, I’m liking the choice of Capaldi. I’ve had fun watching Eccleston, Tennant and Smith as mad young Doctors, but I’d also like to see a more mature time lord besting the Daleks and Zygons.
Now the next big mystery, is to figure out what his catchphrase will be.
